Any advice before I start OC my 460 SLI?

Thread Starter
I have 2 MSI GTX460 Hawks 1GB. I want to start over clocking them. Im not entirely sure what I'm doing but I plan to spend a few hours tonight working on it.

Whats the best programs to use? (OC & Testing)

Do I do both at the same time? or one at a time?

What results should I expect to see.

Any info you can send my way is much appreciated.

MSI Afterburner is one of the best and the one I use. OCing SLI will OC both cards at once, and they will only be as good as the lowest clocked stable card. Meaning if one does 800 and one does 850 when in SLI 800 is about as high as you can go since other card will become unstable and skew your games/benches and cause issues.

Learn how to use an imaging program like Norton Ghost, make and update images of your system. Honestly going deep into PC gaming without imaging your pc is a 1st class ticket to insanity. Yet I bet 70-80% of people on OCN don’t even image their computers regularly.

Btw- Macrium Reflect is a great free imaging program, I've switched over to that from Norton Ghost.

MSI Afterburner is a solid overclocking program - It is straightforward and easy to use.

You'll be overclocking them simultaneously (A setting in Afterburner enables duplication of settings for similar cards (Enable "Synchronize settings for similar graphics processors" setting in the "Settings" submenu)

In terms of clocks, most GTX460s should be capable of at least 850Mhz core clocks. Stronger GPUs will push 925Mhz+ @ 1.087v. You can increase memory clocks incrementally after achieving core stability... That is what I would do anyway

This^.

Leave your volts and continue increasing core speed by 5/10 and test artifacts with kombuster, personally I don't use all those gpus stress testers for staiblity, old fashioned gaming to test stability is the best way. I usually run crysis benchmark on a loop for a few times to test for stability. Once you experience artifacts or staiblity issue raise the voltage by 0.10v and test again. Mean while you want to watch your temps as well.

Good luck

I belive i have my cards sycronized in Afterburner but when i test them with Kombustor it only shows the first one at 98% and on the back of the card are 5 LED lights. on the first one all 5 are lit. and on the second only 2 are lit. i beieve they are volt meters. Am i doing something wrong?.

Oh and i does say that the 2nd card is OC at 850 like the first.

Use Afterburner and enable all of the voltage settings... Then set up a custom fan profile to ensure that you can keep a low temperature.

Get OCCT, and setup a 15 minute test. Enable Error Checking. When the stress tester runs and finds ANY errors, hit escape to exit and bump up the voltage on afterburner, hit apply, and re-test. Once you get NO errors for 15 minutes of stress testing, you can continue to push forward the core and shader clocks and test each new OC for stability and raise voltage when needed.

There is a seperate GPU memory tester on OCCT that works well also. Use the same process for when you raise your memory clocks.

Good luck!

In performance settings for your NVIDIA Drivers you have "Set SLI and PhysX Configuration"
You have set it to "Maximise 3D Performance"? That enables SLI.

And of course you have the SLI connector cable in place?

Just checking the basics....
