Gaming Build for $1,200 or less.

Thread Starter
So my friend wanted me to build him a new computer and he wants it for $1,200 or less. A little bit over $1,200 is okay, but not above $1,250. He will mainly use it for video games like Crysis 2, Starcraft 2, etc. I have already looked at most of the parts and have made a list of them. He is planning to add another hard drive later so I didn't include it in the list. Is this a good gaming build, can I get better parts for less, and would I be able to overclock the CPU, ram, and GPU on this computer? The prices are listed with the shipping, but no tax. Thanks in advance.

I live in Australia so helping with the prices I can't do.

But why the blu-ray drive? If he isn't going to use it, it would be a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

The windows version is fine, it's the OEM copy that's all. Works excatly the same.

If you don't get the blu-ray drive I would upgrade the GPU to a 560.

Last thing, you only have a 60Gb SSD, where's the actual HDD?

He wants the blu-ray drive because he has a lot of blu-ray discs. Also he will be buying a HDD later so it's not included in the list, but it will be a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB HDD.

Ah ok. Well to really round it up to the 1250 mark. I would spend just a little extra on this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

$25 more gets you a 800mhz stock faster CPU that can boost to 3.7GHZ.

Link to a review for you.

Everything looks great, except the GPU, a gtx550 is not a good gaming GPU IMO. I wouldn't get less than a 560, gtx 570 or 6950 would be a better choice.

And I agree on the above CPU choice. BETTER to do it right the first time.

Thanks! What do you think I could overclock the CPU to?

Not sure, but the "K" series CPU's are the CPU's to overclock due to the unlocked multiplier, worth the $25 dollar difference, would be worth $50-100 for me.

Are there any GPU's around the $150 mark that are better than the GTX550? The 6950 and GTX570 are too much.

Ah, okay.

Yes! The one I linked can OC up to 5Ghz. And more if you are willing to push it. But even if you aren't they will go far and fast. With the base clock speed at 3.3GHZ it give's you a ton of room to keep going.

I highly suggest spending the extra money on that. Especially considering it can outperform a $1000 chip in certain circumstances. Though I also agree that you should be getting at least a 560 for gaming. I would suggest that to your friend. Even if it just breaks the budget just a little.

Otherwise you will regret it later and end up spending more money down the track anyway.
