Just thought I'd share my experience in an effort to remind people that personal experience is not a good yard stick for the overall quality of a line of products.

I purchased a Seasonic X-750 on sale from newegg about a week ago, it arrived a couple days ago, and I was waiting for some components to arrive, which finally showed up today. So, I happily went about pulling all the old stuff from the rig I was upgrading, setting up the new components, preparing my cabling, hooking everything up painstakingly, and finalizing everything in the rig.

Double checked all the connections, pulled out that nice thick 16AWG power cable that came with it, plugged it into my strip, hooked it to the PSU, flipped on the power switch and booted up. Everything worked smooth as butter, and confident of the awesomeness of the 80Plus Gold unit I was happy. I got a call about the time I hit the power switch, and someone had lost their car keys, needed me to look for the spare, so I left my computer running under the load I had built it for while I hunted around for keys. While I was searching I thought I smelled something funny, but I was a little distracted and paid no attention.

About 15 minutes after hooking up the supply, and while looking around for the keys I heard a loud BANG. What the hell...? And my monitor display went black. Oh crap, ran over to my computer and dropped the power, but alas the overpowering smell filling my room pretty much assured me that something was dead. Looking over my components I didn't see any obvious burns or physical problems, until I reached into my case and felt my sweet new X750, it felt like it was 1000 degrees. At this point I was pretty sure that it was the PSU that had died, and I hoped the hell it hadnt taken everything with it.

After the onerous task of undoing all my freshly done cables, I unscrewed the PSU and as soon as I moved it knew it was definitely the PSU, the sound like gravel shifting around in the unit suggested something had blown (probably a cap).

So, 15 minutes of run life before a Seasonic X750 80Plus Gold rated PSU died. If I went solely by my own experience I'd suggest that Seasonics are crap, but we all know better don't we? Basically units will vary even in the best lines, and you need to keep in mind the larger scale of things, expert analysis, mass scale of usage and reports. Your input into this is valuable, but just because you had a unit that died doesn't mean that unit is junk, or if yours works that it is awesome.

Lol, I wish I had a 220 line actually, more amps!

I'm pretty sure a cap blew inside the PSU housing, and to see that I'd have to open the casing which I'm pretty sure voids the warranty, and I'd prefer to get another one from RMA (as it's literally like 3 days old) than see the carnage

Maybe I'll try to take a pic through the fan housing and see if anything is visible haha.

A bang would indicate that a switching transistor blew. That could happen for a number of reasons; faulty transistor, transistor not secure to the heatsink, one transistor having a cold joint, controller error, major input spike, etc.

The "gravel" sound you hear is probably the bits of transistor rattling around inside. When a fet blows like that generally it splits in two along the conductor-semiconductor line.

Any decent PSU can switch between 110/220 or 240 without a problem. It's the ones with the old fashioned switch you have to watch

I meant that I'd have more amps available to me, in that I'd be drawing less amps through the system (yes I'm actually in a situation where I'm worried about overloading my circuit lol)

This one time, I had an issue with a specific brand of power supply at work, we continued to order that brand and we'd have failures 30% of the time. Eventually we decided that the brand was absolute trash because it was failing too much, and decided to retire it.

However, We have ordered some brand of motherboards/RAM/HDDs and such in the past as a first time purchase from that specific manufacturer, and the products were was DOA. This doesn't stop us from ordering a specific brand or product, nor does it make us think that product sucks. The one thing you must understand is that you are purchasing Electronics, and they all fail eventually. It just really depends on if they fail everyday or not.

One of the things I hate, is when people get a DOA product, or a product that fails after a couple weeks, then they trash the whole product line of the Manufacturer for being a poor quality builder.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank goodness for Seasonic and their top notch customer service. RMA that thing and they will send you a new one ASAP!
