X58 - Marvell 9182 (R3 BE) RAID 0 or not?

Question - since I've had to reinstall (and might do again as well) do you think it's worth to upgrade the OS drive?

I currently have C300 256B

I was considering:
1) One more C300 256GB for RAID 0 on SATA III Marvel 9182 (yes it works)
2) 2x Vertex 3 120GB
3) 2x Vertex 3 240GB
4) 2x Crucial M4 256GB

What do you think?

Here's what I think:
1) Lack of TRIM shouldn't hurt me - it's just OS and programs, top 150GB and I can leave it idle from time to time for GC
2) Will I see real life performance boost? Loading windows (currently 13s), substantially faster game loads? Or is it mostly benchmarks and what I have is fine (albeit not xtreme

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

your 256gb os drive seems more than enough, what do you need another one for?

EDIT: I'v seen somewhere that intel's controller works so much better than marvell in terms of speeds. Why spend all that money to put on the marvell controller?

Added performance (that's what I hope) but I'm undecided and have the same questions as you just asked hence looking for advice whether it's worth it or not...

Yes, but that would limit me to SATA II - beside I've heard good things about this new Marvell 9182 with ahci drivers in RAID (doesn't mean it's certainly true

Personally I don't think it's worth it as you have more than enough space for your os, games, games and more games but if you are looking for an extra performance increase and don't mind losing TRIM and keeping the cost down, then I would get another and just do a raid 0 for sheer performance. 2 ssd's in raid is abosolutely beastly, however if you have the money to blow away then go for it.

off topic, where's my trader feedback lol!!!!!

EDIT: trust me what you have is more than just fine. This is coming from a guy that just go on the ssd bandwagon thanks to you lol and im loving it You've just forgotton the good old days when HDD's use to do all the work lol me too

Thanks! I'm thinking same what you said, my only doubts are that I rarely reinstall so might next HDD upgrade could be 1,2 or even 3 years away hence I want be sure

from a benchmark perspective?
2x c300 = around 700mbps sequential read. 400ish write
2x vertex 3 = around 1000mbps or 1gb sequential read, 1gb write
2x vertex 3 240 = same as 120gb, but better random 4k
m4 = no idea how it performs.

i would go for the 2x vertex 3 120gb even if you do have money to burn since within with 240gb of space that will last you a long time. not to mention high end ssd price tends to fall within a year. and this set up will last you a pretty long time.

Some food for thought about Marvell 9182:
http://www.overclock.net/ssd/954731-...28-82-not.html
http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-St...p/45240#M14175

Overall, this new Marvell controller is a huge step up from it's previous controllers. So if you are getting 2 drives and planning to RAID them, use Marvell. Will lose TRIM though (will lose it anyway either by switching to Marvell or creating RAID array)

However, the increase in real life speeds won't be very noticeable. You will rock the benchmarks though!

If you say you have unlimited budget and crave for speed, get 2x Vertex 3s. But I personally would be happy with single C300 256GB drive.

Thanks. I'll stick to my C300, not bothered about this benchmarks

stick with the Vertex 3's and just use the Garbage Collection which you won't notice any performance decrease with the latest Sandforce recycling techniques... Performance would be stellar... Love your MB too, i was actually thinking of making the leap to the upgrade but can't justify that price for the upgraded controller and better sli spacing...

It's brilliant, get it if you can. It's more than just better controller and SLI spacing.
I can get my memory to run with speeds my P6X58D-E / Premium couldn't, I can get higher stable OC + lower core voltage on my 24/7.

Best mobo I've ever had - and I'm probably using just 20% what it can do
