The "shortcuts" may not work sometimes, specially if the command you want them to execute needs higher permissions, as sudo. Always check if "execute as a program is checked" in the .sh file.

Nice guide eloverton2!
Thanks! I'm not sure how permissions are set up in a VM (that may be the problem) if you want to sudo the shortcuts, just add sudo in front of the command line of the short cut. i.e.: "sudo bash /home/*PutUserNameHere*/Desktop/FAH/fah.sh".

For those of you who are having problems with the launcher, what version/distro of linux are you using? I recommend ubuntu 11.04, then at the login screen change it to "Classic Gnome" vs. the new gui

Thanks for this guide! I got it working no problem.

First WU is a 2684 not 6900? It's config for big -bigadv and detected 12 cores ...

Running Ubuntu 11.04 Virtual Machine via VMware Player and still folding in Windows on GPUs. Doesn't appear to be affecting PPD on the Fermi GPUs, but together it may be affecting TPF/PPD on SMP? Will have to let it run to see.

Also got my monitoring sorted via a shared folder on Ubunto Virtual for the HFM client running on Windows - works great. A bit easier than having a BAT script copy the files to Dropbox every 15mins, which is what I do for my remote machine folding -bigadv and GPUs that's not on my network.

Btw, I hit 1 million points earlier today! Weeee

Awesome. Glad to see everything worked well for you. 2684 is worth more points, but takes longer to complete. The project you download is totally random and up to the servers, so it just depends on what is available at the time. You'll need to watch hfm to make sure you can complete the -bigadv in time. Running two gpu clients (and windows) while folding will hurt your ppd, but as long as you get it done before the deadline, thats all that matters . Thanks for the rep, and let me know if you have any problems, I'd be happy to help out.

I tried the 12 core units on my 2500k, 4.8GHz gentoo linux, (only uses 120MB's of ram booted to graphical interface), however my PPD went WAY down to only ~2000 PPD. I'm trying the 8 core units now, but just thought I'd say that's a little bit too much for an i5. I'd meet the deadline, but my points would be really bad. Anyone else running 12 core units on an i5 better, or have any PPD guesses on 8 core units for my i5?

Great guide, works amazing, not a single issue with it running how I was supposed to. Just having PPD issues, and that's not your fault.

EDIT: Getting ~17,000 PPD on 4.8GHz i5, really light OS (native, not VM). That seems too low. Thoughts?

if you're folding on a gpu while folding smp, it will slow you way down. did you try folding a 12 core unit with gpu folding off? i guarantee your ppd on your smp will go way up if you turn off your gpu client.

I have one GPU folding on my core2, but the one getting 1200 ppd is an the i5 machine just got converted from genteel to windows 7 with a debian vm. Ill look into maybe why gentoo couldn't pull the ppd, but it really was light. Once I get off work ill kill the GPU as its not worth the ppd its putting out on a 4x slot and the fact its pulling away from my i5.

let me know how it goes. on 8 core -bigadv's (6900, 2685) you should be in the 30k ppd range and on 12 core big -bigadv's (6903) you should be in the 40-50k ppd range.

Are the steps similar to setup the V7 client? I am on 11.04 and trying to get the V7 client to work and following the installation guide they have is not working or I am not good enough with Linux to do it right. LOL
