What 6950 to get for unlock? - Page 2

There is pretty much no risk if you just unlock it and even oc it to 6970 settings. If you leave the RAM timings at 6950 stock settings, you will be fine, since thats the main concern

Mines unlocked, and overclocked on the core, not one jitter of a problem for six months now

just to be sure: ONLY unlocking the shaders is no risk at all right? given it unlocks at all

OC'ing isn't such a great risk? even if you run it at 920 ish for daily use/gaming?

and unlocking and OC'ing at the same time isnt dangerous either?
As long as you do not go all gung-ho with clocks and volts, you should be fine. Keep in mind that not all cards overclock the same. Some clock really good and some do not. I am currently running 910/1350 daily use/gaming at stock volts. Overclock in baby steps and keep a hawk eye on the temps.

If I were to buy the AMD 6950 to unlock I get the SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB. I've owned three of Sapphire products never had any troubles with the cards themselves. Great AMD manufacturer. Enjoy.

That card was back in stock at NewEgg last week, so don't give up hope that it is EOL/gone forever.

It is EOL, but not gone forever because existing stock has not completely dried up yet.

Yes, that's the one, the 11188 version is the one with the custom Sapphire cooler and it won't unlock.

You give me hope . I'm noticing as soon as they are back in stock they disappear quickly. I'm ready to pounce as soon as I get stock email from the egg . I'm so torn between this and 6970s that I missed a few opportunities to get 6950.

It's not even worth the trouble to unlock. You'll get a negligible performance boost and you'll void the warranty.

Just overclock it, you'll see a good boost to HD6970 levels of performance without any change in BIOS.
