Replacing all the copper in Britain with fibre is no small task. It will eliminate the signal degradation over distance problem though.

On the subject of quality of copper. Currently I have fibre to my nearest cabinet around 200-300m away from my house so that's at least 2-300m of copper In signal degradation I drop a possible maximum of 5MB at the moment. Which the engineer who isntalled the modem thought was a "decent" line.
I know how it works, it's just stupid that they're upgrading 50Mb lines which is more than enough for the next 4 or so years anyway when most people can't even hit 2Mb. They should focus on upgrading where it's already needed, not where it's already more than good enough just to make their e-peen bigger with their speeds advertising/marketing. They're just greedy, and that's the reason they won't upgrade anywhere that doesn't already have fibre. There will be no extra money in it for them $o they don't do it.

I just cannot fathom how/why fibre is so lame and overpriced in the UK..In Japan, we were with NTT and paid about £20 a month from memory for 200megs unilmited usage, they changed our phone lines connection to the telegraph pole outside which we paid about £30 for and our phone line changed to IP phone by default saving us tons of money in calls to boot.

I'm a BE customer and very happy overall, but the packages they were touting a while back were awful for fibre, I really expected better.

People in South Korea must be lolling hard at the rest of the world right now.... ; (

Can't wait for FTTH here in Aus. (That's fibre-to-the-home, folks)
