$1700 gaming build. Suggestions?

Thread Starter
So here is the build I'm planning on doing this summer; June maybe. In addition to the new parts listed I will be re-using my Logitech G15 and G5, and a Corsair 60gb SSD from my current rig. I will be getting a new 24in LCD for 1920x1080.

Case: Antec DF-85 $155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129087

Proc: i7 2600k $315
(I know this is overkill for gaming but I plan to do a conservative 4ghz OC and I want to be gtg for the next few years.

Cooler: Thermalright Venomous X $65

Mobo: Gigabyte Z68 $170
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128493

Ram: Gskill 2x4gb DDR3 1600 $95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231428

Graphics: MSI GTX 580 Lightning $525
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127579

PSU: Corsair Professional Series 850w fully modular Gold Certified $180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207017

HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Black 6gb/s $85
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533

Optical Drives: 2x Asus DVD Burner $44 total
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204

OS: Windows 7 home 64 bit oem $100

Is there any real reason I should step down to a 2500k? I can afford the 2600k and I already have an SSD that I will use in this rig, so I don't really see how saving the $90 for use elsewhere will give me better performance.

Any changes you would make? Am I missing anything? I do plan to get another GTX 580 down the road sometime(next year maybe, or whenever a game actually challenges the single card.) I think the XFX PSU will be enough to run them. Thanks for looking.

I went with the 2600 because of things like transcoding video, but I mostly game. To me, for 100 bucks, its worth getting the 2600K over the 2500, but its possible you dont use the benefits. As for cooling, you should be able to easily get that to 4.6 on air, so I may invest in a little better cooler.

I would ask you to take any one of these two psu though that xfx psu is good:
seasonic x850
corsair ax850
antec high current pro850
I would pick the corsair vengeance(theres no specific reason for suggesting corsai)ram and I would get a better cpu cooler like noctura nh d14
Hope you like my suggestion.

Good choice on the cooler, got a 2600K up to 4.8GHz on the hyper 212. I would consider a Corsair PSU though.

The XFX PSU is fine I guess. XFX just rebrands Seasonic units.

2500K for gaming.

If you want to save a few bucks, get a Samsung Spinpoint F3 for $65. Mechanical hard drives with Sata3 are just a gimmick.

Looks good, but I would suggest a different CPU cooler as well. Possibly the Thermalright Venomous X. Or maybe even a TRUE. I also agree that the corsair ax850 would be a better PSU choice. And I too am partial to Corsair RAM, although Gskill is fine as well, just a personal preference I guess.

Thanks for your input.

Any particular reason you prefer those PSU's? I mean yeah they have the Gold rating instead of silver, so they'll last a little longer(maybe?) and use a little less electricity, right? I'm not yet convinced they are worth $50+ more than the XFX.

I chose the Gskill ram for two reasons: I have Gskill ddr2 now and its been flawless, and the heatsink on the ddr3 is small enough that it shouldn't interfere with the CPU cooler. I believe the taller heatsinks on the corsair may interfere with a larger CPU cooler.

Is the 64mb cache a gimmick too? If I wont see any performance gain over the 32mb I may as well go cheaper.

I just looked up the venomous and decided to add it to by build. Thanks for your input.
