Get rid of my ATI 6870?

Thread Starter
I bought a HIS 6870 OC version back in January, and it has performed I would say OK from having had a geforce 8800 card, but I was expecting something a little better if I'm honest.

I only game in 1680x1050 and I have seen some reasonable results with the 6870, but not really to the drama people were telling me I'd see coming from an 8800 series card.

Also I'm a bit unhappy with the ATI drivers, as whichever one I go with, one game or another breaks and it becomes a never ending problem. For example in 11.5 my performance in HL2 games like TF2 gave me worse performance than 11.4, but in 11.4 BF2 Bad Company kept crashing.

On top of all that, knowing I can get extra performance going crossfire isn't reassuring either, mainly because of the ATI driver problems I am currently having and the further potential problems added with crossfire.

Currently I am in the situation of thinking whether to sell my ATI 6870 and opting for a more powerful GPU from Nvidia. I am still however willing to give ATI another chance, and hope that changing to another ATI GPU altogether may also solve some problems, but that seems unlikely.

So, what I am thinking of getting is obviously a new PSU to accomodate whatever new GPU from one of the below:

Nvidia GeForce 560 Ti
Nvidia GeForce 480 GTX
Nvidia GeForce 570 GTX

and... maybe ATI 6970 2GB

I understand that some of these cards might be overkill for 1680x1050, but I don't care, the more fps the merrier!

One thing I should add about the 480 GTX, is that it's noise and heat concerns me. Could someone clarify how bad the heat and noise actually is?

thanks

Get a decent cooler and the heat and noise are a non-issue with the 470 at least, I'm assuming the same goes for the 480.
My twin frozr is at 62C folding at 800 core and 60% fan, it's no louder than the rest of my system and I could get away with lowering it if I wanted to.
Honestly a 6870 should murder 1680x1050 so I don't see why you're unhappy with it

Edit: Also the HX 450 should be fine for any of those unless it's got a terrible 12v rail which it doesn't based on Corsair's other PSUs.

If you dislike it that much, going with the 480 or 570 would be the only two options that are upgrades. The 560 would yield similar results to your 6870.

Also, why include the 6970 in there? I thought you were unhappy with AMDs drivers?

The 6870 does the job ok at 1680x1050, but as soon as I start adding AA and AF in higher modes it doesn't cope so well. Not only that, but as I said before the ATI drivers annoy me to bits where performance is so varied with each driver, as well as all the game issues involved on top.

In the slim chance that the newer GPUs would have less problems with the drivers lol.

Sounds like my old 3870, now that was a card that didn't like AA

Honestly out of what you listed I'd go for a 480 if I could get it cheap, preferably not reference as my watercooled 470 used to be reference cooled and their cooler isn't great if that's anything to go by.
If the cost difference between the 480 and 570 isn't too much you might as well get the 570, just be aware that their VRMs are a bit on the weak side so you'd have to go easy on the overvolting.

Honestly I'm surprised your having trouble. Granted the other PC in the house has a 5870 but It's more than fine at 1920X1080. Your not going to even see the increase you saw when swapping from the 8800 if you go for much less than the top. The older Fermi's are space heater's even when you buy non reference. The new 560 is very nice and truly pretty quiet in a non ref design like ASUS'.

If you've had a bad experience with the drivers then I don't know what to say.. I've only had that issue when it was something user-driven, and 100% of the time a fresh OS install would fix it. Granted though on my last NVidia card (GTX 465) I had 0 issues.

/shrug. I think upgrading is a poor choice atm. Wait for the next series.

Why dont you OC that card a little? My 6870 at 1ghz handles anything I play at 1080p. BC2 maxed out runs at 60fps never goes below 45fps. GTA 4 runs between 50-55fps.

I think you have a bad card?

The space heater part doesn't bother me but I agree with what you said about waiting.
OP you'd see very little gain from upgrading now and 28nm should be very good anyway so you'd only upgrade again when they come out, I'd definitely wait if I were you.

How many FPS are you getting @ 1680 x 1050? Seriously, it's your monitor you need to be upgrading, not your card.

The 570 GTX really is listed there as the back up for the 480 GTX, in case for whatever reason I decide to ditch going for. The 560 Ti looks attractive though, mainly because it can be clocked upto 570 speeds and is considerably cheaper but at the same price I could get the 480 GTX which is faster than the 560 ti and a lot cheaper than 570. Again, the issue with the heat and noise with the 480 GTX concerns me. I have looked at non reference cards, and even some of those have the issues with noise and heat.

The ATI 5870 is quite a bit faster than my ATI 6870 in quite a few things, so I wouldn't be surprised if it handles things better.

I agree with you on coming from the top, regarding the 8800 series. It was a good card for a long time, and held up well in almost everything I thrown at it. I'm just not getting the same vibe with the 6870, and it's probably simply down to being a midrange card - I'm expecting better as the 8800 had impressed so much.

You're right, the only way to satisfy myself with the performance I want is to go to the top again. A 580 GTX would be nice, but it's waaaay too much, so I'm looking at the second or third best from that, which is more affordable.

I may do what you say, and just wait for the next gen cards, but the frustration and issue with the ATI drivers is still there while I wait.

It's already at 940mhz, and I looked at the gains in pushing it further before and the results weren't that great.

You could be right about the card, but I am unsure.

I can't even run GTA 4 without suttering, but then neither can many other ATI users according to the forums I visited.
