If he's getting low FPS with his current monitor, how will going to 1080p help the situation?

Probably meant 120Hz and he's also probably right.

True dat.

OP, I personally haven't had any GPU driver related issues since my 4850. Having said that, I'm not trying to undermine your experience with AMDs drivers. Have you thought about starting up a thread in the AMD section about the issues you're having? Selling your card (for less) and getting a slightly newer one will probably be actually turn out to be a disappointment.

I agree with you on coming from the top, regarding the 8800 series. It was a good card for a long time, and held up well in almost everything I thrown at it. I'm just not getting the same vibe with the 6870, and it's probably simply down to being a midrange card - I'm expecting better as the 8800 had impressed so much.

You're right, the only way to satisfy myself with the performance I want is to go to the top again. A 580 GTX would be nice, but it's waaaay too much, so I'm looking at the second or third best from that, which is more affordable.

I may do what you say, and just wait for the next gen cards, but the frustration and issue with the ATI drivers is still there while I wait.
I'm afraid the only way you'll get a quiet, cool 480 is if it's underwater. Since you don't want to go that route, the a 560 is a solid option. But you'll see little FPS increase. Your synthetics will go up but your gaming experience will likely vary little.

I know you wanted to stay away from AMD but the 6950 isn't a bad option... especially if you don't mind unlocking a reference model. The 2GB of VRAM is the way things are heading with all the AA options and such.

Again though... I really think your better off waiting for Kepler.

6870 is a great card. You're just doing it wrong and/or have no idea what performance to actually expect from a 6870.

Whenever performance fails for me, it's overclocking time. Nothing better than free performance. In your case, you NEED to hit 1Ghz on the core.

600W is minimum for the 480.
And 550W for the 570.

The gtx 480 can draw 300W on its own.
The stock CPU takes 95W.
That leaves 55W for the rest of the system and overclocking. Its not gonna happen.

IMO, get a corsar tx-650W or 750W and then the gtx 480. And then a better monitor.

Thread Starter
The problem as I said before guys, is when I start trying things like 4xAA or 16xAF which I was expecting to use in 1680x1050 with this card, in games like Bad Company, and TF2, I get a lot fps drops which I can feel in the gameplay. One moment it's in the highs like 160fps+ which is smooth as hell in TF2 and then it is down to 60 which feels slower and affects smoothness of aiming and various things - yes I know vsync off causes this to happen, but it shouldn't be so inconsistent - my 8800 card wasn't like this using vsync off. Because it is feels inconsistent, the effects feel dramatic and I am feeling it more when I play which is distracting.

I guess I just expected it to handle stuff better - my 8800 card for example could handle AA a bit in new games, although fps would be a lot lower, it wasn't as up and down (40-60fps in TF2 with most settings on high).

Everything is on by default that I can see. I am using 11.4 catalysts, as they for me are better than 11.5, here are some screenshots of my settings:

Edit: The only thing that is different is the OC speed is 920mhz instead of 940mhz (which is what I manually tried before and found little difference) - the 920mhz speed is the default OC that came with my HIS brand card.
