Unlocking AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana

Thread Starter
Just a couple of quick questions. I have an AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana cpu in an Asus M4A78LT-M LE mobo which has the core unlocker feature. I'm thinking of unlocking the 4th core (or attempting to do so anyway) and I've read up on quite a few threads on how to do so. My only concerns are heat and stability since I've never unlocked or overclocked anything ever. The cpu is running on the stock cooler so I'm not sure if heat will suddenly be an issue if I successfully unlock the 4th core. Also, is there a chance that the cpu will be stable without increasing voltages?

I should also note that my build isn't crazy by any means. The gpu is only an MSI GeForce 9600 GT so nothing insane really (it was an econo build that I put together when our old HP computer's mobo fried in the middle of the school term).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just unlock it by following the instructions you found, then run Prime95 (blend or small fft) if it boots. Monitor the temps so they dont go over about 55c, max is 62c i believe. Good luck with the unlock, I've unlocked 4 CPU's with 100% success (2x Phenom II x2 555, Phenom ii X3 720, and the Phenom II x3 740 in my sig)

Also, you shouldn't need to raise the voltage.

Unlock it, and test with Prime95 for eight hours to make sure its stable, and keep temperatures below 55C. You shouldn't need to change anything else... If it errors in Prime or refuses to post/load windows or it BSoD's, then your fourth core is faulty and you should revert back to the triple core design. smile.gif

Anything over 55C is too hot and you'll need better cooling, but no dramatically extra heat should be produced by unlocking the fourth core... It might be a tad bit hotter but nothing major.

Good luck!

Well I gave it a whirl and . . . nothing!

So I changed ACC to Auto and Core Unleash (think that's what it's called) to Enabled, rebooted and I get a blank screen with my power light on the monitor flashing. Cleared CMOS and all is well. So, I think I might need to increase the voltage. The guide on here says to do so incrementally so by how much should I start increasing it in order to make an attempt at stability? Also I assume any voltage increase will lead to a heat increase?

Well the same thing happens to me when I try to unlock my X3. I am not aware if voltage increases will have any positive effect on unlocking. I have given up on the venture, but I am curious to see if this works for you.

The LE uses a 3+1 power phase, unlocking an Athlon II x3 can add power consumption that could place it over the motherboard's safe limit. Not that this may cause damage or worse, but it may result in some things improperly working (i.e. throttling due to VRM heat but CPU temp is fine)

sorry but max temp for athlon II x3 series and x4 series is 75C
and 71C for phenoms ... wink.gif

Well tried again and increased the CPU over voltage to 1.25V although I wasn't sure if that was the same as adjusting vcore. Anyway the computer still wouldn't POST so I'm giving up.

When I'm finally able to buy the rest of the parts for my build (this one is my fiancées computer) I'll see how much I can overclock the i7 960 that I got for $125 biggrin.gif
