1) Do you see crossfire enabled in CCC (assuming you do)?
2) all physical connections are good?
3) what case are you using? what is the air-flow inside the case?
4) the top card always gets quite a bit hotter. can you put a side fan or try out with the side panel off and maybe a fan blowing on the cards?

It's actually the bottom card that is running quite a bit hotter, the top card is doing just fine and is easily within acceptable temps.

Crossfire is enabled.

Connections are solid.

I can get the card to an acceptable temp when I manually adjust the fan, so additional cooling is really not necessary.

I'm really not feeling that overheating is the issue, could it be something else in my system, something like not enough ram or my cpu isn't fast enough? But I still don't see those being a problem, cpu clocked at 3.26.

the low fps is probably due to you only having 512mb of video ram and 2GB of ram.
you won't really be able to run much Anti-Aliasing with a 512mb card

To combat you on that, according to toms hardware on xfire 4870s 512mb, they are getting 70 fps average.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2...ny-2,2464.html

and I have 4 gb of ram, not two, sorry it's a bit hard to decipher, I'll change it.

something else I noticed today, the ep45-ud3p has this nice feature where it underclocks your cpu if it gets too hot, and I just noticed that this has been being activated and my cpu clock has been thrown down to 2.6 during games, thinking this is a major contributor to my problems, I had a stable overclock with it a while ago, thinking I'll reapply paste a reseat the heatsink.

Also, even when running at 3.2 the second gpu is only at 50% usage, 60% max, any ideas on that?

Where did you buy the card at? Was it from a store or someone's personal card that they were selling? If it is out of warranty, I would reapply the TIM. In my personal experiences with this, GPU's like a bit more TIM than what you would place on a CPU, but that is all relative to how well the HSF is contacting the GPU. A few test fits should be done to ensure that you are achieving proper contact in correlation to temp differences.

that's a feature of the cpu itself. it won't do it until you're a good bit over 70*C
yours can't be running that hot

Mine does run that hot, and has been, reapplied the paste and I'm running a lot cooler now, but I still have noticed that both of the cards are only running at about 50% usage when running a game, while the cpu is still only at 70% usage, so I don't see a bottleneck happening and am confused as to why the cards are not running at their max potential.

It was a personal card, bought it used off of here, and looking at visiontek's warranty, it doesn't apply to me at all, so I may reapply paste, but I'm still not convinced that's the problem.

this is a complete shot in the dark, but try running your RAM at 1066 with slightly looser timings, something like 5-5-5-18. I gained 5-8fps in BC2 when I did that

I really don't know anything about overclocking ram, is there going to be any chance of frying it when I do that? cause that's the last thing I want to do, buy more ram.
