What benchmarks? Aside from one very vague chart, we've got nothing.

Their 8 core is priced to compete with a sandy bridge quad core with ht, which means they will likely perform the same in highly threaded apps, with the sandy bridge quad pulling ahead in gaming, just like it has been for the past few years. Amd has jumped ahead another generation, but has not caught up to intel, based on this pricing.

The thing is, they're not priced on relative performance alone. If everything was priced based on that then intel wouldn't have one of their $1000 processors beat by its own $315 processors.

Guessing at performance and actually judging AMD's new product based on nothing but price alone is completely pointless. Lets see some performance numbers to back up your claim that AMD's new processors aren't better then Intel's.

Oh wait...

Your post contains too much common sense. Something that is clearly lacking in this thread.

It's sad to see that 99% of posters in this thread have absolutely no understanding of basic economic principles.

Hmmm, my new upgrade is either going to be a phenom ii x6 or a zambezi x4, what to choose.......

My question is, can 8 cores out perform 4 plus hyper threading @ the same clocks/

Not necessarily... there is the possibility of aggressive pricing. Nearly nobody will buy a $1000 processor now, hence perhaps AMD does not choose to compete in the top category.

In addition, due to the way BD was designed, these aren't exactly 100% true cores either. This is chip multi-threading, a supposedly more efficient way of software multi-threading. So for 4 modules you are able to get 2 integer cores (where most processing is done) but the FP cores and some caches are shared.

I don't understand how it's hard to see.

You have Uberbully Intel finally launching new architecture CPU at a $300 price point which is unheard of since 1997.

vs.

Underdog AMD who is mostly pwned by the Uberbully.

And people expect AMD to launch their new architecture CPU at a higher price point?

Since when did paying more equate to being better when it's competitor vs competitor? I believe in this regard when it's an in house product list, but cost between competitors doesn't have a lick to do with it. 2cents.gif

Well I won't make any snap judgements, but theoretcially 8 should best 4 computationally and remain cooler running while doing it. wink.gif

Yeah we could keep debating on BD's perfs according to its price with no real information whatsoever OR, we could just wait for benches.

Saying stuff like "Yeah, it costs 320$ so my 2500k is better!" doesn't make sense. Wait and see guys!
