Which PCI case fan? - Page 3

I have the AOC FC-2000 PCI Slot Case Cooler and love it but it sounds like that's not what your looking for.

Just oriented my 212 vertically, saw a 2C drop in idle temps, a 1C drop in system temps, and i also switched around my GFX and now my HD5850 idles at 29C at 40% fan!!!! And my GTX 275 idle temps dropped 3C at atock fanspeed
OMG thank you SOO much for all of your drawings and advice it worked out PERFECTLY!!

But i do not have a side fan on my antec 300 because i put a plexiglass window there, and i cannot get the antec spot cool because all i have is a 10$ giftcard and its like 14$ .
With that in mind what is my best course of action (10$ limit)

It is good to see noticeable thermal improvement!

I see 3 issues again which I will address accordingly:-

1. The Antec Spot Cool is not absolutely needed. Another fan (80/92/120) could be easily used as an equally effective substitute. But such a fan will then need to be fixed in position with some diy method (eg zip ties) at that specific angled location. If you have an old fan collecting dust in a closet, you could use it and you do not even need to use the $10 giftcard.

2. Having no side panel fan will bring some negative impact to the cooling of the CPU. It is hard to assess the degree of impact. But the degree will certainly not bring BSOD. And the CPU temp will not be anything worse than the current horizontal 212+ setup. As you have already re-oriented the 212+ and see improvement, it is just that you are not reaching the optimum for the CPU cooling.

A cheap solution is to cut an opening on the side panel to install a fan. The opening should be positioned for the fan to intake air to the region between the 212+ and the HD5850 and to the intake fan of the 5850. See the orange oval in pic for reference.

3. As for a Zalman Fan Bracket, its benefit might be limited as there is no side panel opening for it to intake air directly. It just does not have a clear and well defined air intake path. But if it is ever used even without a side panel fan opening, position it over the orange oval area. It might bring a small improvement or a small thermal degradation (due to possible non desirable recirculation of air).

I dont think i will be cutting my plexiglass because i LOVE looking inside my case to see all my shiny toys , but i did order another 120mm fan to replace the one currently pushing on my 212, and i will use the old 120mm fan to direct airflow up from the exhaust of my 5850, because while the temps are very low on my 5850, the heatpipes are burning up (i almost burnt myself on them).

Will post results once my new 120mm comes in (3 day shipping)
