iTunes "128kbps AAC" converting for ipod - worth it?

Thread Starter
Well i'm about to load 50 gigs of music onto my ipod.. I'm not sure whether i should select this option in itunes that says "convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps AAC" since I have never used it before..

a few questions now.

1) would it change the original file to 128kbps AAC?

2) is there a noticeable difference in quality by converting a mashup of mp3's that range from 128-320kbps?

3) will it make my ipod less slow? sometimes when i change a song i can feel and hear the ipod working to read the new song..

I just restored it to because it always froze when i plugged it into itunes so its completely wiped clean currently.

+rep to anyone who can help me out ASAP.

Well it compresses it, with is good if you need space, but it reduces the bit rate, I personally have it disabled because I have songs with bit rates up to 320Kbps, the higher the bit rate, the better the quality, if quality does not concern you, activate it, it might save you some space

transcoding lossy files only results in more loss.

don't do it.

itunes should restrict that option to lossless files only.

No, it would keep the original.

There will always be a quality drop. You might not notice it though, depending on your headphones. Try doing it with a few songs that you know well to see if you can tell the difference.

It could, since it would be able to put more of the song into it's buffer. Although it might not make a difference unless you were near the end of the song and it started to put the next into the buffer.

Rep given. i think i'll test with a few songs.

And also, the reason my ipods completely clean right now is because whenever i plug it into my PC, itunes goes unresponsive and i have to force restart my ipod. And if itunes manages to not freeze, then whenever i drag music to my ipod it will sync 1/4 of the first song and then freeze.. any ideas on this? it works fine when i plug it in my moms mac, but all my songs are on my pc.

The main reason why you would want to convert to 128 is to fit a high bit-rate music collection onto a small capacity iPod. I have 26GB of mostly lossless music, and I can fit almost all of that onto a 8GB iPod Nano. Now, as far as sound quality, you won't notice it with a pair of shoopy wal-mart headphones, but with a high quality headset you'll definitely notice the iFail.

I just have some cheap generic apple earbuds for now because my skullcandys broke..

(no i would never buy skull candys with my own money, i got them from a friend for free) if anyone is going to say those arn't any better than the generic ipod headphones, well thats pretty much true hahah except i got some cushions off amazon that made them fit perfectly tight where i hear no outside noise, along with overall better sound quality because they can be planted deeper and stay there.

So yeah, chances are you won't even notice the difference. You can't even tell the difference with skullcandies. As for that stupid iPod freezing, I don't know, but my iTouch 4th gen 32GB has been causing my computer to have a conniption fit every time I plug it in.
