Build Tips?

Thread Starter
I'm currently at work so I can not add my system, but I was wondering what programs are recommended to download for a new build? I want to make sure everything is running perfect before I start my overclocking. What programs will help with this, and how long would you check everything out before starting to overclock? I'll add the system to my sig when I get home.

Thanks in advance

The only thing you need is windows a version of windows and a stability tester like prime 95, OCCT and the like. Read up on Ocing and mirror the way other people do it. Take your time and remember that your system has a limit. Unless you have proper cooling and massive faith, don't risk a total failure for an extra 5mhz.

Other than installing windows and updating your drivers, you don't really need to install anything just to make your computer run well. Make sure you get your drivers from the chipset manufacturer's website; i.e. if you have an nvidia graphics card get your drivers from nvidia's website and not EVGA even though that's what it says on the box.

I mean there are the standards, like firefox/chrome and your antivirus of choice, but you only have to install the things you use.

When it comes to overclocking, there are several guides in the sticky at the top of this board-

Ok, I've added my build. I have built a few computers in the past but this will be my biggest, so it needs to be perfect. I'm currently downloading the drivers and programs I need. If I don't plan on using RAID do I still update the drivers? What monitor software do you recommend downloading. CPU-Z is the only one I have. I need to make sure the SSD, HD's are functioning properly before the RMA time expires. Of topic how does the rep thing work?

ooooOOOOooo you went all out didn't you? I'm envious

Anyway if it boots, in all likelihood your hardware is fine. There are stress testing programs you can use to verify stability, which you will use anyway when you do overclock. Orthos or prime95 for your CPU, ATItool for your graphics card (yes it's ati, but the stress testing part works fine for an nvidia card), and hwmonitor to keep an eye on your temps. GPU-Z is what it looks like, CPU-Z for your graphics card.

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205 (prime95)
http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ (atitool)
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html (hwmonitor)

http://www.alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?cat_id=4 (SSD benchmark. Yes it's german, still works though)

AS SSD benchmark will let you make sure your SSD is performing as advertised, and really that's all I'd worry about. There are guides to setting up windows for your SSD in the SSD forum, you should check those out too.

Anyway rep is a way to say thanks (officially you're suppost to rep posts that you find helpful). It pops up a box where you can write a little love note, and the poster's rep count goes up by one. Some people care about that number more than others... lol

Yes I tried, I've been on here and all the deal sites since February. I think my girl has gotten tired of the UPS guy . Hope I'm good for another 4 years. It seems to be a problem with the SSD benchmark site. Will Crystaldiskmark do the same job? The bad news is I wasn't able to start my build today, but It is on for Sunday. I plan to be on in the evening with updates. I'm sending some reps now. Thanks for all the help.
