Overclocking Q6600 problems

Thread Starter
I am trying to overclock my Q6600 revision G0. I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R for my motherboard. From everything I have read this is a good motherboard for overclocking. Anytime I try to bump up my speeds to anything past 2.5 my computer freaks out and resets. I am very new to overclocking and dont really know all that much but I do know that going from 2.4 to just 2.5 shouldnt cause these problems. What should I tweak in my bios to solve this issue?

Is this your first time overclocking?

Usually you'd have to bump the voltages up in bios if you haven't set it

Yeah this is my first time. Is it the Vcore setting (its at 1.32500V) I should adjust first or is it a different voltage setting?

Yeah you need to increase the Vcore. Try 1.35 or 1.4 and then start upping the fsb.
Ok first of all, the Q6600 can do at least 2.8GHZ with stock voltage in my experience. So that isn't why it's flipping out.

I can't help you though because that sounds very odd and I have no idea what's causing that.
Voltage isn't the problem as khaotik said. Is your RAM running above spec? It's about the only component that might have such a low tolerance to overclocking, although g.skill is usually good. Getting over 2.5 should be an absolute cakewalk so I can't think what might be wrong :?

Edit: that or is your PCI-e somehow increasing in proportion to your FSB? That'd cause instability with a small overclock but should still be okay at 2.5, there's literally no reason for a G0 Q6600 on that board not to overclock to at least 2.7 by just changing the FSB

Lower the multiplier on your RAM so it is below stock speeds, then get your CPU stable and then go back and OC the RAM later.

Go to the UD3 thread for help. And fill in your specs.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ers-guide.html

Your board is more than capable of overclocking that or any Core 2 Quad.

I didnt know about lowering the multipliers on the ram. That fixed the problem though. Right now Im running it at 2.7 ghz and the stress test is fine so far. But temps are in the mid 60s which is a bit high. Im probably going to need a new heat sink, anyone know of a good one?
