Memory Lane!

Thread Starter
I used to be very active in the F@H forum back in the day, but lately it hasn't been so.

Now that i'm a moderator in this forum, i've been looking at it a bit more. It's come to my attention i don't recognize anyone!

I'll try not to sound ancient here, but i remember very well when we were folding on dual and quad cores, running VMWare in the Linux SMP client. The latest and greatest folding machines were the 8800GT, which got about 4,000 points a day! That was better than almost any CPU could do, there was no bonuses!

I started folding back in 2008 i believe, and it's been slow and steady ever since. I've really never folded on more than one piece of equipment. Started out with my trusty E8400, then when the GPU client came out (CUDA was new!), the 8800s hit the folding market full force. I later upgraded to a GTX 260 core 216 and got 7-8k ppd i believe. Now i'm on a GTX 460 and still only getting 11k ppd.

Over the past 3 years i've got about 4.9 million points. That's on less than 10k ppd for the most part..i'm about to break 5 million.

At one point I was in the top 100! And i never quit folding, everyone else just is faster than me

The past year or so I haven't even checked my stats hardly. I leave the console client open most of the time, that's about it. Couldn't care less about the points to be honest.

So how many of you are old timers? Remember nitteo and how he crashed the OCN servers when big news sites linked to us? Remember WINNING the Chimp Challenge? Remember when EVGA and us were neck and neck? Remember barnettworks, mortimersnerd (nothing against zodac obviously!), the ORIGINAL team competition, and VMWare? The days when OCN as a whole was doing a million points a day, and that was awesome? The days when bigadv didn't exist, bonuses didn't exist, and the only way to get massive amounts of points was getting massive amounts of GPUs, SMPs, Blade servers, or all of the above?

I can't be the only one

You left out Knitelife, our CC Captain in 2009. But yeah I remember. Folding on my quad and getting 200PPD or so.

I wish I was a part. I've read through the original posts from my team and others. But hey, ya gotta start somewhere Better than not starting at all

Now, I think it's more of a competition and points thing than back-in-the-day. I won't lie... if it weren't for the points and competition, I never would have started.

But hey.. what ever gets ya going for the actual outcome of the project, am I right?

OT: @VTECH.... i had this conversation with a buddy. It's pretty cool when it does kick in

I use to lurk these forums long before I joined, but I missed the early days of folding because I rarely post and it took over a year to finally figure out GPU2 on my 260s...

I admit I didn't make the same mistake twice, I asked when it became time for SMP.

I really think OCN is the best forum I have lurked and I have never even considered joining any others under any conditions.

My first folding rig was a dual core and an 8600gt. It was middle of the road. I then loaded up my q6600 and an pair of 8800gtx and was rockin the world... ...been hanging around the top 20-30 producers ever since.

Yeah, I still remember everything you mentioned. It's funny how I'm constantly stuck behind the 8 ball. Your talking about the days when people were folding on 8800s and dual cores. In those days I was folding on Pentium 4s. Now that everyone has moved on to the new hotness vid cards and -bigadv, I'm folding with essentially 8800s. lol One of these days I'm gonna break into that top 20 though, just wait. I had my 9800GTX go kaput a few months and I stopped folding because all I was left with was a 9600gso but the CC has gotten me interested again.

Oh, and Mort is still around. I saw him in the CC chat over at Hardware Canucks.

I know he's still around, but he used to be Folding editor then he became mod, now he retired and is a vendor.
