i7 930 Overclock Issue

Thread Starter
Hi Folks,

I am new member here but have been a browser of these forums for a while .

To gain some more performance out of my processor I decided to overclock it, but because I dont have alot of experience with overclocking I came across the following thead, and set my bios to the settings he recommended (for Running 4.01GHz w/ HyperThreading (Stable) as his system was very much like mine.

The overclock worked fine and the speed was excellent but I noticed the other day that my ram (while showing 12gb installed) the bios could only recognise 8gb. I thought it might have been the overclock so I went in a reset my bios to factory defaults and then rebooted which fixed my problem .

My question is, what would cause the ram to not fully show up after like a couple of weeks ? I still wish to overclock it again but dont want the same ram issue to happen. I am wondering if someone would be able to assist me out, I have posted my computer spec's below.

CPU: i7 930 @ 2.8
RAM: Corsair 12GB, PC3-12800 1600MHz - 9-9-9-24
Motherboard: Asus P6X58D
Cooler: CoolIT Systems ECO-R120

TIA - Spikey.

Just a guess but with 12 gb of ram you will have to raise the qpi higher than 1.2 maybe to 1.3 and also what is the ram voltage supposed to be? if it is 1.5 you may have to raise it a hair to 1.55 or 1.6. also make sure the timings are set to the 9-9-9-24.

Ok, you are correct on the ram the SPI Voltage (from Corsair's site) shows it to be 1.5. So you reckon keep everything the same but up the qpi to 1.3 and the voltage on the ram to 1.55 or 6 ?

TIA.

xmisery was only using 6GB of ram in those settings that you copied, so you'll probably need more "qpi/dram" voltage to help your cpu's memory controller. Technically it's called the VTT or Uncore, but I won't nitpick .

All i7s are different, but if you successfully ran with 1.21v for awhile, you should only need a small bump for stability again... reload your 4ghz overclock but set 1.23v or 1.24v for the qpi/dram and test it.

that's what i would do. I have the corsair 12gb vengence and when I oc it I will lose one of them if I go too high but I gain it back after raising the voltage a little. But if you are going for the 190bclk then the ram should be below 1600 so just be sure the qpi is higher and the timings are correct.

Thanks for the suggestions and assistance, it is great to see. I shall go into the bios and overclock it again but will up the dram to 1.23 this time. I shall post back and let you know how I go.

Cheers Folks!
