At 2560x1440 1.5GB Vram will be sufficient 90% of the time. The only games that will struggle with that amount of Vram is Metro 2033 and Crysis and that is at max settings and more than 4xAA is used. Most other games barely reach 1GB at that resolution.

All I have to say is 1080p is ~2 million pixels, 1440 is nearly double that. Using a 1.5Gb card at 1440 is like a using 768Mb card at 1080p, yea you can get by but it is certainly not ideal and if you are buying new then there is no reason to buy only the bare minimum that you need now when you can get more than enough VRAM for the foreseeable future for only 15-20% more

The 580 should be sufficient for everything else except for metro and crysis. in metro, don't turn on MSAA and advanced DOF. in crysis, leave AA off. you should be ok.

you'll get slightly higher fps since ur res is slightly lower. again, turn off antialiasing. if enthusiast is too laggy, turn down to gamer.

if the 580 can't get playable fps, then the 560 ti SLI probably won't be much higher. The SLI 560Ti's put out 30% more FPS then the single 580, and cost the exact same amount as a single 3gb card (Australia pricing)

EDIT: if u want absolute maxed out settings in all games though,

only 580 SLI will deliver in crysis and metro. putting 2 of the "Single" most powerful cards in the word together is definately going to be the fastest SLI solution, but you pay for that privilege
