Thinking 6950's CF right away or no?

Thread Starter
I just bought some new parts to rebuild my PC. A gigabyte Z68 board, the i5-2500K, a new SSD, and some kingston hyper x 2x2gb 2133 ram. I'm currently leaning towards the 6950 2gb card, circuitycity.com has the HIS version for $239. I'm wondering should I get 2 right away or would one be enough for Witcher 2?

And also I have this corsair 850w I got it in 2009 so is it still enough to power a pair of 6950's?

Edit: Oh yeah I'm not dead set on the 6950's so I'm open to suggestions.

One 6950 would definitely be enough and 2 would be even better. Do it!

Apparently Witcher 2 is a monster of a ***** to run maxed out.

Although, on just one monitor, a single 6950, especially when unlocked, should be able to play in 1080p nearly maxed out. If you want to run 2560x1600 or eyefinity resolutions, 2 will definitely be necessary.

Sounds worth it, you'll be set for a long time on 6950 cf.

Linus from LinusTechTips said that SLI is pointless unless your going to do it right away. I would agree, but maybe try one and see if it is enough. If not, get another.

It may be overkill today! But next week might not meet minimum system requirments!

Well the OP is using AMD and it's crossfiring but I understood what you meant.

As for the OP - you should try the one out first. If you have the cash then go for it. If your on a tight budget then wait. If your playing all the games you like without any problems then it dosen't do you any good to get it right away.

When you notice that games are starting to slow you down or not pushing enough FPS then crossfire that card and take off again staying ahead of the curve. I think your gonig to be fine with one card at least for some time to come. Unless you decide to multi-montior or 3D gaming / 3D movies.

Enjoy your new rig setup, always a fun time.

@OP I'm running 2 6950's (2gb versions) on a 750w PC P&C supply with zero issues, your supply will be just fine. As far as going with 1 vs 2. I just upgraded from crossfired 5770's. Loving the step up to 6950's. If the price of 2 doesn't bother you, do it, great buy.

Thanks, I'm not tight on money so I went with 2. I think most of all I'm excited to try out the new 6gb/sec SSD's I haven't even messed with a SSD yet, so hopefully I will be blown away. Now to wait patiently by, hopefully Circuitcity ships to APO's as well as Amazon does, newegg is really bad at it.
