People should really invest in a solid aluminum case. That is why I bought an M8, 100% aluminum and will last forever.

Budget aluminum cases are bad. They vibrate and feel very weak. It is better to get a rigid painted steel case than get a thin aluminum one.

Only get aluminum if you are willing to pay for the thicker, more expensive ones.

Very happy with my Silverstone TJ09 all aluminum plus brushed aluminum panels, i cant stand steel cases anymore.

This also applies to CM with the ATCS840 @200~ too.

Aluminum is great for modding, just go on mdpc and see for your self how many alu cases there are.
Because the A70F (which I'm assuming you're referring to) doesn't have the same features as other full-tower cases in its range.

It's a great case, but the inside is unpainted, it doesn't have USB 3, its cooling and cable routing options are limited, it's only got 7 PCI-E slots, etc.

If they made a Lancool variant of it in plastic and steel, it'd sell for $120-$130, tops.

But once you start adding larger fans, better dust filtration, radiator mounting options, an 8th expansion slot, full tool-free optical drives and hard drive bays, better cable routing with grommets, and paint the inside - you're adding cost.

It comes down to what you want - if all you want is the case to be made out of aluminum, then Lian-Li serves that market and they do a pretty good job of it. But if there are other features that you want that make building your system easier and better looking - then aluminum has to get sacrificed for feature set.

If we were to build an exact replica of the 800D using Aluminum everywhere we used steel, it would cost over $400. And who would buy that? Maybe 1/10th of the people who buy it now, if we were lucky.

Maybe so, but a CaseLabs M8, which is a larger case made from heavy aluminum (and arguably more flexible design) is about $360

Coolermaster used to sell a case called the Wave Master for $150~ usd.. Man that thing was thick and more solid than my current Lian LI. Also looked great in comparison to their current atrocities.

That's still $100 more than you can get an 800D for, and you could argue it has less features (no hot-swap bay, no tool-free optical drives, etc).

But it doesn't really matter because they have a different business model than we do. They're basically a boutique custom build shop with a very specific series of cases, and they sell direct to consumer, so you have to buy from them directly, as far as I know.

Corsair sells primarily through retail and distribution. The tradeoff being that there's a double margin stack (we make our money selling to guys like Newegg and Fry's and Scan, they make their money selling to you) but you can buy it just about anywhere so it's more convenient and there are guys competing on price.

I'm guessing if CaseLabs had to sell their stuff retail to the same number of outlets we did, their cases would be a lot more expensive.

I do love their stuff though - one of these days I'll buy one for competitive analysis. Heh.

I don't know why people are complaining about the weight. Unless you want to carry it to the lan party or something. I'm fine with steel. My case weight about 30-40 lbs with the system, without it 25 lbs and it doesn't bother me when move it around to install something.
