Can't overclock GT 240?

Thread Starter
I have an EVGA GeForce GT 240 512MB GDDR5. The stock clocks are:
550/1340/1700.

The core and shader clocks are linked together. When I increase the core clock to 650 mhz, the card underclocks itself?

Is there anyway for me to overclock the GT 240?

I don't have any experience with the GT240, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was very difficult to overclock. It's already using as much power as it possibly can since it's limited to the PCI-E slot (no psu connection). The GT240 bios is probably preventing you from going further.

Updating the BIOS on the GPU huh. I will see if I can do that. Thank you for the reply.

You seem to be at the limit everyone's encountering for that card- look at a few GT240 reviews:

"For the Asus card, we managed to bring it to 640MHz core, 4000MHz RAM, and 1475MHz shader clock. This is an improvement of 16%, 17%, and 10% respectively. We believe that this card is actually capable of more, but we have encountered an interesting quirk with it.

When we attempt to define custom clock speeds on it, our watt meter shows the power usage of our test rig dropping by a few watts, which under normal circumstances doesn’t make any sense. We suspect that the voltage on the GPU core is being reduced when the card is overclocked...

For the EVGA card, we managed to bring it to 650MHz core, 4000MHz RAM, and 1700MHz shader clock. This is an improvement of 18%, 11%, and 27% respectively."

Might want to try this:

"The overclocks of our card are 620 MHz core (13% overclock) and 1960 MHz Memory (9% overclock). Getting this much overclock out of the card was quite difficult. When applying a normal method of changing 3D clocks only and then testing if the card is stable I could barely overclock core/shaders by 20 MHz. Then the card would jump into some kind of safety mode which forces 2D Low Power clocks all the time. To get out of this mode you need to reboot, which can be a quite frustrating waste of time when searching for a maximum overclock. In order to reduce the amount of time spent to find the max OC I forced the clocks I wanted to test on both the 2D Low Power and 3D profile. Surprisingly the card stopped crashing/mode changing and simply went on to run fine."

Maybe it is the power management mode in NVIDIA Control Panel?

Yes, that is what I am using. It always underclocks itself when I increase the core clocks.

what do you mean by it underclocks itself? The overclock would not apply or the core gets below normal?
