6950 reference or Twin Frozr III

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Im planning to build a giming computer with a single amd 6950 card. I know i've posted a similar thread to this, but this is different.

I was searching on the interwebs today and i could find plenty of reference cards, which are almost guaranteed to unlock, but then i stumbled upon this: http://www.thiando.nl/products.php?M...35ff65e965af94 It's only 206 euros!!! and it can be delivered within 10 days.

The cheapest Twin Frozr III i can find in my country are 243 euros. Is the better cooler and the reduced chance of unlocking really worth the 40 euro premium?

jump on the reference, might be a little louder, BUT it'll unlock to a 6970. And it'll spit the heat out of your case, rather than into your case.

Reference cards are usually better hence them being more expensive.. And im pretty sure you can turn it into a 6970.

go with that reference card.

as long as it has dual bios, you can unlock the shaders without worry.

How much do you value silence. You'll be giving up possibly 10% performance (with unlock) for a much quieter card.

All new badges of 6950´s that have been in market circulation since a few weeks are supposed to be laser cut.

Unlock probability is very at the moment regardless of ref or non ref.

TWFIII has a FAR superior cooler with an 11C advantage over the ref cooling.

Also it will overclock much better due to structural enhancements and specially designed hardware as for example better VRM´s , better voltage controller , etc etc.

TWFIII is the better pick I took it too.

You just need to configure a good negative pressure airflow in your case with the TWFIII then you will have absolutely no problem and far superior performance/cooling than then any ref card could ever achieve.

The ONLY reason for you to consider ref design should be if you are willing to water cool!

I'd go with the reference design. Not only will it be more likely to be able to unlock but it should also be more compatible with various mods, say if you want to install an even better cooler than the TFIII.

TFIII over reference design = FTW... the small gain in unlock will NOT outweigh the +300mhz OC on stock cooler that the TFIII is capable of.

Why is everyone is suggesting the reference design?

The TFIII is the clear winner here, ref design only for watercooling.

Noobs please you need to stop spreading your misconceptions!

There is no 6950 which is more likely to be unlocked.
Completely regardless of ref , non ref !

If a card will unlock or not only depends on the fact if it has been laser cut or not!

The process of laser cutting was conducted radomly but according to recent claims of AMD there will be precautionary measures taken to inhibit customers from performing the unlock.

Meaning more cards will be laser cut and those new laser cut badges are already in market circulation so the probability of ANY 6950 unlocking ref or not is highly decimated.

So stop spewing around the rumor that a ref card´s "advantage" is being more likely to unlock ...it is cómplete nonsense.
It is funny how fast it spreads though..on idiot said it and all the noobs copy it immediately and have no shame of expanding this baloney.

The Twin Frozr III is a far superior card in terms of overclockability and cooling performance.

The card has various structural enhancments and modifications the ref cards just do not posess.
These physical mods and upgrades grant it far superior overclocking performance which will get the overclock much higher and more stable.

The other important thing is the cooler....the TWFIII is high performing and said to perform up to 20 degrees better compared to the reference cooler.
That means even higher overclock and more silent and efficient cooling.

You should always consider buying a ref card out of a single reason ...if you are willing to fit aftermarket coolers or waterblocks on it.
If that is not your agenda get the TWFIII it is the best 6950 there is.
