curious about increasing fsb or multi

Thread Starter
ok other than the FSB upping everything else. Does the processor perform better at 4.0 with a higher fsb? or leaving the fsb alone and upping the multi to hit 4.0? or is it the same performance outcome.

thank you.

the system will perform better at a higher fsb (specifically a higher nb). however, the higher the fsb goes (which also increases, nb, ram, and HT) the more factors come into play, and the harder it is to get rock stable. at 4.0 you will get better stability from a multi overclock, better performance from an fsb overclock. the key is to find the proper balance between the 2.

for fsb overclock, you will likely have to change your ram divider, and lower your HT multi.

Bench it yourself and tell us the answer

Really for Black Edition chips, use the multi first, then fine-tune with the HT reference clock. Typically fine tuning won't take you far, maybe 203-206.

right right. but either way whether the cpu hits 4.0 by fsb or multi. The cpu and only the cpu will perform the same correct?

im not certain what you mean by perform the same, yes, it will be running 4.0 ghz the same speed- but benchmarks and cpu performance is still dependent upon the fsb/nb/memory

disregaurd the nb and memory. Will a cpu (strictly cpu, only cpu). run with the same performance at 4.0 whether u up the multi or fsb. remember only the cpu.

No. 4.0 by overclocking the fsb will outperform 4.0 at x20

edit/addition: my 1090t at 4.24 (265x16) nets much better f@h ppd than my 1090t at 4.2 (200x21)

aight ty. lol so strictly 4.2 fsb upped cpu vs 4.2 multi upped cpu. the 4.2 fsb will out perform the cpu using the multi. without taking the other components into consideration

The answer to your questions is yes.
The CPU will bench the same if it is a test isolating the CPU only.
Regardless if you get there through FSB, or multiplier.

what i'm trying to say is that you can't take the other components into consideration. cpu "performance" depends heavily upon the "performance" of all the parts in the system. the higher all the other parts perform, the better the cpu will perform. a cpu stress test or bench mark doesn't just test the cpu, it tests the system and gives a cpu score. if the cpu has to wait on memory speed or a low nb, it will be bottlenecked.
