What is your room ambient and what's your idle temperature gtx 580 lightning?
It was a reference 6870 that would hit 70 °C gaming and idled in the 40s.

The 580 is idling at 29 °C right now. The room is kind of chilly though (~17 °C).

My room is probably about 72 degrees F.
My card idles at ~51C, and loads at over 70C.
I wish mine was idling at 29C!

Lightning series are really top of the line cards (Ati or Nvidia) that run very cool and quiet. I still miss my Lightning II 5870 which can do 1Ghz and a bit more on stock V without a sweat while 10C cooler than references .

Aw man looks like I got a card with a poorly seated Twin Frozr III.

Guru3d's 580 Lightning idled at 31 and loaded at 57.
Hardware Canucks Lightning idled at 29 and loaded at 57.

I have a well-ventilated case and I've never had a graphics card run so hot. I'm idling at over 50 degrees C. Too bad.

Yeah, idling over 50 °C is definitely not okay. Do you think you can RMA it? Or maybe email Amazon to see if they have a replacement they can send you.

I guess it's worth a try.

I'm not really worried about the temps, but it's the fan. Once temps gets into the 70s it get super loud. If I was idling in the high 20s and loading in the mid to high 50s it would be all good in terms of the fan noise.

I guess I'll contact MSI.

I got one of these cards (at regular price) and it is damn impressive. I also purchased an MSI Z68 MB that is very very nice. MSI have come a long way and are basically showing up EVGA and Asus with these custom pieces. I can see myself buying MSI products exclusively if they keep this up.

I see you have two monitors of different sizes. Wasn't there some issue where the drivers forced the card to run full voltages and clocks when it output to two different screen resolutions? Or am I crazy and this was fixed?
