Thats what happened with Metro, than I had a crash but lost my saves. I started from the begging and played all the way through the other day. Playing Singularity now, thats kind of why I'm looking for that Russian nuclear style game again.

Call of Pripyat would be perfect for you.

It combines Clear Sky innovations (upgrades, artifact hunting) and the exploration from SoC, but without the double dose of difficulty towards the end.

There are maybe two parts in CoP I've come across that required more than a reload or two, whereas SoC is a reload-fest.

Clearsky was my least favorite of the 3. For me it was SOC > Pripyat > Clear Sky. Although I liked the menu's / customization of Pripyat best.

erm, I started playing it again and I think I maybe missed something? I just kept going through teleports and killing bad guys along the way and now I seem to be stuck where a teleport just puts me about 20ft away from where I entered it (the one that's on the stairwell) Should I have shot that bloke with the electro rifle thing before I got there or something?

If you can't get into SoC, I wouldn't bother with Clear Sky or CoP. The three are not that different, fundamentally ... not nearly as much 'different' as, say, ME and ME2, or AC vs AC2.

Although I have no idea how anyone could have trouble getting into SoC, as it's my favorite game of all time. It is very tough in the beginning, though, since the guns and armor really stink, plus there's like no tutorial. Rule 1: make LOTS of manual saves, don't just spam the quicksave or you'll end up sorry. But mostly, save A LOT otherwise you'll end up VERY frustrated due to having to replay stuff over and over.

If you can just slog through the tough beginning, get used to the interface and controls and stuff (a lot of buttons need remapping from their defaults) and play it long enough to get a good weapon, with a scope ... the game gets REALLY fun.

Although it's considered a 'hybrid', honestly its RTS elements are very watered down ... and there is a TON of gun fights in SoC. And many of the battles are some of the funnest firefights you'll ever be involved in. I don't think I've ever played a game where the gunplay is more satisfying. Landing a deadly head shot on a heavily armored Monolith soldier from 100 meters using the Vintar BC, properly accounting for it's bullet drop over distance ... it's pretty magical

What I'm getting at here is: I highly urge you NOT to give up on SoC. Like I say, the game will eventually suck you in and become REALLY fun (at least, when you're not crapping yourself ... because the game gets pretty dang freaky as well). Awesome gunplay, above-average storyline, some genuinely creepy sections, amazing atmosphere ... I really don't think there's ever been a better single-player FPS game aside from Half-Life 2 ... and even that one is arguable to me.

Complete Mod is mandatory on SoC, though, as it makes it look SOOOO much better

@Wooly:
99% sure you just need to keep looking around to find the next teleport ... I don't think there's anything you HAVE to do in the whole teleporting section aside from just getting from one teleporter to another. There's definitely no specific person you need to kill in order to be able to advance.

hmm, thanks.. I can't seem to find another teleport though other than the one which seems to just plonk me down on the same bit of roof where the teleport entrance is on the stairs.
Tried investigating, climbing ladders and I can jump over some pipes to get to another part of the roof but can't get back. There is more ladders there which lead down to a fenced off grassy area at the side of the building but that's about it

Stalker series IS an FPS, although very focused on exploration and inventory items.

I was on my second go round a some building and I keep getting my but kicked. I just couldn't get out of their. I'm sure I will reinstall it some day and try again.

From looking at GameGuid looks like I should read that. A lot of stuff to learn about the game. Sometimes I just have no patience.
I'll try to give you a few hints, so you don't get too lost at the beginning:
a) You want to engage the enemies the further the better. At the beginning this won't be easy with your crappy pistol nor sawn-off shotgun, so you better avoid the military guys.

b) You want to get behind cover ALL THE TIME. This ain't a normal shooter by no means, if a guy has a better weapon than you, you will get raped all the time...and provided they are always in groups, go figure.

c) You want to aim for the head ALWAYS. The difference between a headshot an not is like day and night: headshot saves you ammo, time and weapon degradation, which are all key figures. Also, you want to low-crouch all the time to increase accuracy and use ironsight or scope as it greatly increases accuracy (yeah, pistol still sucks no matter what you try ).

Now, what to do when you start the game?
I don't recommend that you try the game in higher difficulties unless you are used to its combat style. So, lets start a game in normal mode.

You have started, talked to Sidrorovich and the like: check the roof's of the buildings where you start the game, you will find some fancy stuff (although I don't fully remembered if it was edited with Complete mod; and I seriously recommend that you play with that mod as its much better than the original one, less buggy, works better also).

At this point, you want to talk to the guy with the AK on that town, he will give you a mission that you have to raid a village nearby. Try to stay behind your mates, and behind cover. If you do some noise enemies will go to you (beware, they will surround you, always), allow them. You should have realised by now that there is a small number below the mini-map: it tells you how many NPC you have around (enemies, allies or neutral, doesn't matter). Check it constantly to know when you are in trouble.

Once you have cleared the area, you should check all bodies (enemies or not) and take all the weapons, ammo and stuff you can. Only keep for yourself weapons that are in nearly-mint condicition or they will jam on the worse possible moment (its always the same, shotguns always jams when you are about to shoot point-blank somebody ).

As of now, you have two different lines of action:
a) You can attack the military-cordon in order to get through (use the roof of the nearest building so you are safe)
b) You can find a way through the railway (I believe there is one) if you follow it.

I would try to kill those military guys. They have much better weapons, and the better the weapons you get, and the sooner you do so, the better the experience becomes.

Until you get Streloks AK you will waste 3/5 of the ammo that you shoot at mid or long range, so you wanna keep and eye on that. Also, swtich your firind mode to semi-auto, and shoot bullets one at a time in order to get maximum accuracy (well, the max the weapon gives you ).

All in all, keep trying. I can tell you that the beginning of the game is a pain in the ass...as you go along the game shows itself as (IMO) the best FPS in regards of atmosphear and context and one of the best FPS experiences you could ever have. I don't know how many times I have done SOC, could be more than a dozen (with Complete, Lurk, Priboy, Oblivion, etc), and I still enjoy like the first day: dungeons still give me the creeps.

PS: you can also try to attack the big military base that is located nearby the noob-camp. Don't do it without grenades nor patience, because once you attack the patrol all the camp goes to the noob-camp: but if you succed, you get a ton of nice weapons and everything gets easier from now on.

PSS: if you do, though, you wanna normal save before attacking the patrol just in case you mess it all up...remember in this game to normal save whenever you change from one area to another and, DON'T FORGET, whenever you load a game your charachter will make noise so if you were infiltrated you don't want to load as your cover will go to waste. Its one of the most irritating bugs, you snitch to a base, save and, if you die and load, all the guys around will know you are there. Beware of that.

honestly i would play soc all the way through before you make a judgment imo soc sucked in the beginning and was pretty hard to get used to but after i played it all the way through and then started on cs i was addicted to them. i find myself playing the entire series over and over again trying new things and playing with mods to make it harder/creepier. to answer your question op between the three cs was the worst to many bugs and glitches and the story wasnt as well thought out as soc and cop. if you play soc all the way through and like it then get the whole series. despite the bugs and glitches clearsky was good and cop is my fav of them all.

Check a walkthrough? (of course, massive spoilers inside)

Also, I have some Hooj Choons records from when I used to spin =)

Pete Lazoby's "Sacred cycles" is the only one I can remember.
