[Autodesk] 123D - Free 3D Modeling Software - Page 5

Coming from Inventor, using Sketchup was extremely annoying because of its lack of simple features such as a dimension tool after the object is made. As for 123D, I will have to try it and compare my thoughts between it and inventor.

I'm not alone. I've made entire Maps and cars for Midtown Madness 2 using zmodeler when I was younger.

Imma leave this alone til it gets a few updates.

Same experience on my W500, an ISV certified mobile workstation with ATI FireGL graphics. I think I'll wait for it to mature a little.

For anyone wondering:

This is a very similar program to Pro-Engineering, it's used as a sketch program to display/showcase objects that would otherwise be difficult to display. I was just messing with it to see all of the features, and I must say, it's a bit awkward to use. My biggest problem I have with it is trying to adjust to "orbiting" around the object. So far I made very simple and primitive objects, using the shell tool, revolve tool (of course extrude and the such). I haven't figured out how to change sketches with an already extruded object, and I lost my actions tree, not sure how to get it back either. Couldn't get mirror to work, same with revolve and the other tools. Switching inbetween planes is awkward and I forget which plane I'm on, and often irksome that way.

I feel that this wall of text would be better put in a bullet point format, but whatever. I'm lazy. But like with any program, I'm sure this just needs some fine tuning, and love and care from the user to take full advantage of it. Otherwise, it's a great program to have since it's free. But if I were to pay for a program, I would go with Pro-E, as I know it, and has much more restrictions to follow, and thus, able to make more complex objects.

So yes, while you can get the software for free as a student, doing any real work with them will get you in trouble down the road.

I don't know about Maya, but I've never seen watermarks in 3DS Max with a student copy...

Via plugins and for certain tasks, yes. iRay (part of mentalray 3.8) uses CUDA for ray tracing.
