Hey all

Im currently looking at buying a HTPC here are the specs:

Case: Silverstone brushed aluminium front with hidden bays (push open), AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600,
2GB RAM
300GB Seagate HDD
Asus M2N8-VMX motherboard
Pioneer BDC-S02BK
Shaw PSU
Microsoft MCE remote keyboard and IR remote
Windows XP

i've also got another 2 PCs that i can canablise to get more ram, better graphics, more HDD space etc..

But would the above be a good entry level setup?

cheers

Not a bad way to start! Have you looked into what program you will use? Will you just stick with Windows Media Center, or have you looked at XBMC at all? I use xbmc and I LOVE it.

Also, with that mobo, you realize you will be limited to that bluray drive and one hard drive regarding SATA ports right? That will be ok as a starter, but you will find yourself wanting if you plan to put bluray rips onto your hard drive. I went through 300 gigs like it was nothing.. >_>

One last thing, your mobo only has VGA as an output... So you're going to need a video card.. I can't help you out too much in that department, I'm sure someone else here can. I think I've read good things about anything that is a gtx 210 and up, although don't take my word for it. It won't be too expensive either. Less than 50 bucks. Good luck!!

I have a couple spares lying around:
9800GT
Geforce 280GTX
GTS250

if my mate doesn't want the GTS i'll use that if not i'll remove the 280GTX from my sig rig until i find a replacement

why would you install an outdated OS?

else everything is good

Get a GT 430 as it draws less power & will able to handle the job perfectly.

Maybe he has a legal key and doesn't need to spend money for Vista/7?

Its a HTPC, you don't need to be fancy with it.
