Mount radiator outside of case? Or not worth the trouble?

Hey guys,

I've got an RX 360 mounted on the top of my HAF 932 in push/pull (intake). No real problems; however, I can't get over the fact that I'm basically blasting hot air down into the case. Of course, if I go the other way (exhaust) with the rad, then I'm pulling hot air from inside the case (and from my bottom mounted 240 rad) across the fins.

So, I'm thinking about screwing aesthetics and just mounting the RX 360 externally with maybe a Koolance bracket.

What do you guys think? Would there really be any temp decrease?

I also imagine it might be easier to bleed (since the radiator would be orientated vertically with the barbs at the top.)

Personally i think its much neater if you mount your rad internally; but if your happy to moumt externally, its entirly your choice

I prefer to mount radiators internally. Looks much better.

I am a function over looks operator. When I am running one of my partial externally mounted radiator rigs at 4.05GHz at 100% 24/7 for folding I do everything I can to get the temps down, like leave the side cover off also. The rigs I made to fold 24/7 I went pure function, with looks way back there. After function came ease of service and how many fittings were in a place to leak (in the very low chance that they did, but rotarys do leak) and damage something. You want a rig to look nice, be able to keep the side panels on and run it till its tounge is hanging out, well it won't be one of mine.I also mount the P/S externally, just to keep the heat from that out of the case. With an i7-930 at 4.05GHz I can stay well under 70C even when ambient is 95F. Now would anyone but me accept a rig that is so extremely setup for high ambient 24/7 folding? probably not, but the points look the same.

Yeah, I agree it does look a heckuva lot better.

I guess I'm asking if there would really be enough of a performance increase to justify it.

I just realized it'll be PITA to drain if mounted externally unless I get QDCs.

If i were to mount a rad externally, I'd make some sort of rad box and use some quick disconnects on the case.

Probably not worth the trouble. But your motherboard must be dying in there with all that heat. lol

I have 4 WC rigs and 3 have external rads mounted. The look of a rad hanging off the back does not bother me.If your temps are good internal then don't move it.Maybe you should change the direction of the fans on both rads to flow out of the case and then recheck temps.

Well, my temps are fine (at least, I'm OK with them -- about +20C over ambient at load, +7C over ambient at idle.) I guess I'm just trying to see if it could make them any better with the materials I already own. In other words, I'm trying to achieve the absolutely coolest temps with my current gear.

I was just curious if anyone else had tried both and seen a performance increase...or if it were not really worth the hassle

I have my rad mounted outside my case because I needed the ability to place it in different areas (EG windowsill, next to A/C, underwater).
But thats just because its running 24/7.
