big problem

Hey guys i just recently bought my first gaming pc so I really dont know alot about much lol.

I bought a PC and i have dual GTX 580's. it runs great on some games and other games not so much. like GTA IV and NFS Shift 2 really eat it up.

it will play fine at a lower resolution but as soon as i raise it to 1080 with maxxed out settings the screen will go black for a few seconds and come back and repeat over and over. it will play GTA IV on MAX in 1080P in 30HZ mode but soon as i raise it to 60 or 120HZ it does its black screen strobe light stuff. it has a fresh and clean install of the latest drivers from invidia. have deleted and reinstalled twice with same result.

i downloaded msi afterburner and severely under clocked everything and set fans on high thinking maybe it was a temp thing but they dont see over 70-80C most of the time

i have also disable SLI with same result. taking card one out and used card 2 as main with same result

as i do not have an extensive knowledge of what to do next can someone please give me some pointers?. thanks alot

try use some old drivers, make sure to remove the gpu drivers from the hard drive with Driver Sweeper, beta drivers maybe wont work for you, and install fresh drivers , always reboot after new installation or uninstalled drivers

You aren't 'forcing' any settings through NVCP are you? If so, restore everything to default settings and see if the problem goes away.

Might also try re-seating the cards, making sure that the power cables are firmly plugged in.

Also ... have you tried w/your CPU at stock clocks? Who did the OC'ing, btw?

Welcome to PC Gaming.

I feel like a total douche telling everybody this but this one piece of advice will make your troubleshooting so much easier and it will save you a ton of frustration, yet most people (even on OCN don’t do it.

My advice to any newbie starting out in PC gaming.... learn how to use imaging software like Norton Ghost or Macrium Reflect. What purpose does imaging software have? It make system restores so much easier.

Let me explain a little about the benefits of imaging software. You know how when you order a pc from dell, alienware, hp or whoever they always include restore dvd's? The purpose of these restore dvd's is in case your pc gets hosed you can boot off the restore dvd's and restore the software to factory default (like it was when brand new....software wise at least; a system restore isn't going to do a damn thing about a hardware problem but I digress. ..).

What imaging software does is it let's you make your own custom 'resstore dvd's ' so to speak. But since a system image is often 10's of Gigabytes big its better to store the image on an Dexternal hard drive. I for example hhave two recent images, one is 50Gb in size, the other is 70Gb in size....no way in hell I'm burning those on 5 or 7 dvd's respectively. Instead those images are sitting on the 2nd hard drive I have on my machine (image the active boot hard drive, write the image to the secoundary hard drive ).

And this imaging software stuff isn't some weird esoteric software. ...IT depts at Fortune 500 companies use them. That's how they do big pc hardware rollouts. They buy dozens of identically spec-ed machines from Dell (or whoever ), the IT dept makes 1 company system image, they put that image on a network server and all the new pc's get 'restored ' using this 1 company image.

So that's my one big piece of advice to you and any other pc gaming newbie.... learn how to use imaging software. Norton Ghost is a little bit easier but its commercial (ie not free) software. Macrium Reflect is almost as easy to use and its freeware.

Good luck and I hope you figure out this particular problem.

i bought it from Origin. they did the overclocking and water cooling system and everything. i just threw the money at them lol.

and yes i have tried other games. oddly enough metro 2033 seems to be the most stable one at 1080.. go figure, but i have not tried with the stock cpu clocks. kind of hesitant to mess with the cpu, but it seems very stable with low temps.

i might give the older drivers a shot. its a real shame there tech support is closed when i am able to call them. they told me if its card related they would just send new cards cause i have the 1 year free replacement warranty on the system. but honestly what is the odds of my cards being bad. I'm trying to narrow it down, but its hard when i don't really know what what I'm looking for.

and what do you mean by forcing settings through NVCP?

oh and it came with a system image restore disk, a system recovery disk, and the original windows 7 disk. so restoring it shouldn't be a problem but it being brand new and doing this from the start i don't think it would help. but thanks for the advice

NVCP = nvidia Control Panel. You can go in there and 'force' like 16xAA on all games (or on specific games using the gaming profiles) and stuff like that. I was saying if you've done so, restore these settings to defaults cause this can cause problems in some games.

oh ok gotcha. no i haven't played with any settings like that. just specific ingame settings. it seems like i can max them all out if i use 30hz setting lol. no idea why. a single GTX 580 should be able to run any game at 1080 60hz and i went with SLI for that added security and bragging rights i guess lol. games look amazing in between black screens!! lol

Is gta 4 the only game with this problem? A couple things about gta 4, its a really bad console port technically wise and it doesn't support sli iirc (do a quick google, that should tell you whether it supports sli).

You try turning v sync on or off? Sounds like that may fix it.
