surround vision plus extra screen

Thread Starter
I'm currently running surround vision with three screens using two gtx 580s on my asus p7p board with i5 760. Was wondering if changed my mobo to support 3 gpus if I could add another video card to run a fourth monitor? Also would my cpu be able to support all of these screens? And would a 850 psu be able to support the third card? Sat a gtx 460?

Nvidia Surround maxes out at three monitors, if you add another GPU to the system you should still be able to activate a monitor on it but you won't be able to use the actual Nvidia Surround settings to have quadruple-monitor gaming or quadruple-monitor "span mode".

Thank you!

I'm not planning on trying to expand surround vision, rather just use it as an extra monitor so I can say play videos on it while playing games.

Should a 800W psu support another card? say 460? 560?

I can understand if you want have a desktop of the fourth monitor for maybe a messenger or facebook or something but why videos? if im gaming its all i really concentrate on. Videos seems a bit distracting to me haha.

Just a suggestion... Why not get a 6990? You can have up to 6 monitors in what ever setup you like and it's cheaper than 2 x 580s; actually with rebates considered you could probably buy a 6990+6950 for the price of 2x580s

I tend to play a lot of fps/mmos/rpgs so when it gets a bit slow I turn on a video. It was fine when I only had two screens since one screen could be maximized for the video while the other could be used for the game. But after starting with SV that's not possible.

How would the 6990 stand up to 3x 1920x1080 screens at max settings though? I've had bad experience with ATI in the past, tried using eyefinity and left me cursing at the cards due to bad experience. But since I already have my 2x 580's, unless there's significance improvement to switch to a 6990, don't see a reason at the moment.

- A 6990 can support 3x1080p displays easily, even at max settings. The better option I think would be getting 2x6950s 2GB mainly because you can find 6950s real cheap now and if you get unlockable ones then you can pretty much turn them in to 6990.

- If your sig rig is up to date, then it really isn't recommended running a 3 GPU setup on your mobo. You will have to put one card (guessing the 460) in the 4x slot, which will compromise it's performance, and ALL your PSI slots will be covered, which is not good for airflow, and if you have a sound card/network card then you'll have to take them out.

- Your 800w PSU is going to struggle to power 2x580s and a 460 (it probably won't be able to actually). 460s are very power hungry.

- With your mobo it's best to run a max of 2 GPUs. AMD cards can give you what your looking for without overloading your PSU or having to plug any cards in to the 4x slot.

So in conclusion I'd rule out a SLI 580 + 460 setup.

it is possible, probably the cheapest route would be a 5xxx AMD card or 6xxx in eyefinity plus a cheap nvidia 9500gt

I used to run 5 monitors like this, 3x2007fp in eyefinity w/ a/ 5850 + 1 3007 wfp-hc + 1 2001fp powered from the 9500 gt

honestly, I just did it for poops n giggles..and b/c I could

dont worry about the fact that it is a x4 slot. all you are going to be doing is putting simple entertainment on there- im guessing cartoons, pron, maybe web browsing but never any games- so you wont be using your vid card very much anyway. maybe you could just grab a gtx 250 or something since that would be more than enough for watching movies.
