[CNN] Why would-be engineers end up as English majors - Page 29

just a random example from last semester that i find humorous... i was in a senior-level course, Colonial American History. Halfway through the semester, several students threw a tantrum in-class, asking "why are we learning about English colonies in a American history class?"

I'm being told by the chairs at the college I attended for first year engineering (they are linked with the UoA), that engineering is currently the hardest course to get into. The minimal GPA is the highest across the board. It now out weighs medical.

But that really sucks. Frankly, if you are paying that much more, I would demand better teachers. Not ones to hold my hand, but to teach us the fundamentals as clear and purposeful as possible. Especially with the right notation and proper terminology. Surely, won't their teachers be paid more because of this increase?

Tuition was raised for engineers here at UW-Madison too
post #285 of 341
Seems like engineering tuition is being raised all over the place.

I read the article a few days ago and can relate. I'd be surprised if 2/3 of the engineering freshman were still here after our sophomore semester just finished. One of my biggest teacher complaints if how few of them speak understandable english... That, and lab professors who have never done anything but theoretical work.

Well that should be a consquence of what this article talks about. I am afraid that many immigrants are taking jobs that Natives don't want.

Take for example the orange plantations all over the country.

While that is true, you cannot throw a bunch of English speaking American students into a room with a professor that doesn't speak the same language and be surprised that people drop out. When you sign up to be a professor, you have a responsibility to teach. I'm not asking for perfect english, but when you've been teaching for 20 years, is it so much to ask of a person to work on making themselves understandable? Even things like prolific use of PowerPoint really goes a long way here.

"No...but I work through all of the homeworks with the solutions manual..." You're wasting your time.

. . . Kids these days don't seem to think there's any personal accountability with education, and everything is expected to be given to them. Get rid of the entitlement issues that seem to get worse and worse with the younger and younger generations (likely due to the insta-access of "information" available on the net these days), and teach them some personal responsibility and accountability, and that will go a long way to fixing our educational problems. How to implement that--that's something for people smarter than me to figure out...
This.

I'm a first year grad student and am finishing my third quarter TAing. I am amazed at how the students complain that they fail but do so little to engage with the material. Since section attendance isn't mandatory I see about 20 of my 120 students. . . Students also aren't interested in making connections between their classes and learning outside the box. And no, wikipedia should not be your first and only reference source.

I read somewhere that graduation rates for college (undergrad) now are in line with graduation rates for high school fifty years ago. In essence, the degree is the new diploma and qualifies you for about as much. This is why we need dump majors. . . everybody knows what they are for their schools (dump majors at my undergrad school were health sciences and psychology).

Probably because the average ME or EE degree is 25-33% more credit hours for the same damn undergrad degree than an Poly Sci degree. Not to mention that a "five hour" class for a ME is worth three credits, and for a lib arts major, it's worth five.

To succeed in engineering you need to be smart, be willing to give up all your free time, have some money, and you really need to want to do it.

I've always wanted to become a Chemical Engineer, however...

I got a D in High School Algebra, had to retake it.

I got a D in Calculus w/ Analytical Geometry TWICE.

From then on, I had to ditch my engineering dreams.

Some people want to have careers in fields which they are not intellectually inclined to complete.
