[Project] Rusty Cage - Fractal Design Define XL - GPU waterblocks installed (new pics!) - Page 2

I want to take this time to talk about the case now that I've spent some time with it (it was the last thing I ordered and the last thing to arrive).

For $139 I think I made the best decision possible without moving up to something like the Danger Den 26 or 29. This is exactly what I wanted and cheaper than the comparable Lian Li. I've already mounted the PSU and removed the bottom drive cages (riveted) for my radiator mount. There is a lot of room and this case would have been superb if you were staying with air.

I would like to get the remaining two front fans, a 140mm down bottom and a 120mm up top. Fractal Design includes one front 140mm right in the middle by default.

I read complaints about getting the fan filters out and back in because the little door (similar to the Antec P182 I had) doesn't open far enough. Sure enough it was tricky. However, if you remove the entire front panel, this process becomes 1,000 times easier.

The Define XL really is well put together for a full tower in this price range. You'll pay more for the cheapest full tower Lian Li and I paid about $180 for my Antec P182 mid tower three years ago that the Define takes a lot of design characteristics from. You do get some plastic in place of aluminum, but for the price you won't miss it.

I would recommend this case to anyone wanting a minimalistic full tower. I hope the smaller Define R3 is made just as well. If so, Fractal Design has a good thing going.

Pros
  • Roomy
  • Good air flow
  • Good cable management
  • Fan cables are sleeved
  • Interior is black cool.gif
  • Quiet (sound dampening material)
  • Gorgeous
  • Supports up to 10 HDDs out of the box
  • Top panel connections (USB, Audio, eSATA)
  • Screws are black!

Cons
  • 5.25 bay covers need to be redesigned, they're flimsy
  • The bottom drive bays need to be removable just like the top one
  • The case's feet are chrome. They stand out a little too much

The P182 was my first case deviation from Lian Li. Probably helped that my wife helped pick it out.

Time to tear up something!

This update focuses on removing the bottom hard drive cages because they're riveted and mounting the PSU to allow for the XSPC RX360 radiator (The Beast).

The PSU was quite easy. I turned it up on its side (with a little force to make it go), intake fan facing me, drilled two holes for the screws, and was done. It'll get practically fresh air from what passes through the radiator and still exhausts out the back like normal. I do have to fabricate a PSU cover out of steel/aluminum which I'll probably start this weekend.

Removing the hard drive cages was a little more stressful as I'd never drilled through rivets before. I took a small bit and moved up in size after I'd done my pilot hole. This made the whole process a cakewalk and the bottom pair of cages were out in no time.

I apologize about the quality of the first few pics. My wife had left with the camera and I was not about to waste home alone time and not work on the case. These are phone pics, which should be quite obvious.

Required Tools:

Pair of bits with rivets attached:

Cages out and test fitting the PSU:

Cleaned up:

PSU mounted (sorry for the poor lightning):
