Computer won't turn on(shut off during prime95)

Thread Starter
I've OC my cpu(phenom 2 955 to 3.8ghz V1.43) and ram (2x2g gskill 128000 to 8-8-8-24 V1.63) on a MSI 870-G45 ATX mobo.

I left prime95 run for about 40 min and when I checked my comp it was off, I tried turning it back on but it wouldn't. Even tried clearing the Cmos via jumper and taking out the battery. I've also took out the ram and put them back still nothing

I know it's not the power supply cause I've tried it with a different one and it still won't turn on.

All that happens when I press the power button is the led light on the computer turns on for a split second and the computer sounds like it's powering up but then stops right there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to OCN. You should fill out your system specifications in the User CP so we know full detail on the system without having to read it on your post.

To double check that it isn't the power supply...I suggest you follow the video to test it.

Otherwise I'd suspect something isn't grounded properly or a shortage. It may be a pain but you should remove everything out of the case and run the system again to see if it will works properly...as a similar situation happened to me when I found out that my fan controller's aluminum face made a little contact with the whole case causing my system to turn off prematurely and never be able to turn back on. Proper placement got my system up and running again with no issue.

Unfortunately, you have fried the VRMs. I had the same board a while back and I did the same thing. To confirm this, unplug the 4 pin CPU power from the motherboard and press the power button. If the system fires up but doesn't POST then you have a case of dead VRMs.

Hey man I tried what you said and the computer did fire up (obviously nothing comes up on the monitors. Is there another test I can do to make sure it's the mobo and not the ram/cpu?

I guess ill be buying another mobo, better than having to buy a new cpu lol

thanks man

Ill post again to see if that was the only issue, if you have any other suggestions/info please let me know

Thinking exactly the same thing. Just make sure your next board isn't from MSI

It *might* be the VRMs, but first you have to prove it.
Take out the 4-pin CPU power connector.
Try and boot the board. If it boots (it won't POST), you fried the VRMs.

EDIT: Beat to it!

Unfortunately fried VRMs is a known problem with this board and 125W TDP processors esp. with OC. This is due to a weak VRM design with 4+1 phase and problems everywhere (MOSFET quality, choke quality, no OCP protection, etc.)
