Budget $300-$400 headphones+amp.

Hey guys,

Story

Day after day I find myself craving for better sound stage and overall music quality. I use my Shure SE 425s as my main earphones right now and I just dont seem to find my self happy enough with the performance they bring me. So here I am to look for something better, NOT "IN-Ear" ones.

About me

I listen to some of everything.. I like bass, treble, details.. My set up would be

on the go: FLAC>PowerAmp(a well know Android music player Software) on my Motorola Atrix(MB860)>AMP(dont know which)>Headphones(dont know which.

at home: FLAC>foobar>Creative titanium HD>amp>(dont know which)>headphones>dont know which..

About the head phones+amp:

must sound better than my Shure SE425s..They can be open or closed can. From the price range of $300-$400, can be a little over $400 within reasons. They must look stylish, to you at least...
But I dont want to attract too much attention either..

I will appreciate any opinions..

Not sure if you mean 300-400 for just the hps and amp or inclusive? But around that price range and your needs I'd take a look at the HD600>Littledot MKIII/darkvoice (might have to look at used), or a pair of D2000's + FiiO E7.

I apologize for going offtopic, but what is your opinion about the stock quality of music out of the atrix's amp? It sounds better than my 3rd generation ipod touch, but not quite as good as my Fiio E5.

The Fiio E11 may be of interest to you, if you are looking for a portable amp, hope this helps. Its not out as of yet, though.

I would upgrade you dac actualy. The x fi series isn't designed to be used with music, and you can't get very good sound from a sound card compared to an external dac. Dac's are expensive though, so maybe save up a bit.

If you don't want to do that though, I would look at the HD650's. They go for around $300 on ebay somtimes. They're good for all types of music too. For the amp, maybe some tube amp. I've heard the hd 650s are pickey about amps.

it's decent, but not quite as good as i would like them to be. One of the best in a phone. Why do you ask if you have one?

what were they designed for then..? that's what i bought them for
how much are we talking here for a decent DAC? will a see a huge improvement? if so i wouldnt mind dropping some money on it.

maybe the bundle off Senheiser Pc350 and the Asus xonar xense soundcard with the built-in amp i have bought that and it is amazing.

with your budget you might be a little hard pressed, but here's what I'd do....

Sell the creative card and get a GRUB DAC. You can build one yourself for under $30ish, buy a built one for more. If you can build then I'd also build a miniMax, or a Max and include the GRUB in the enclosure. This combo will run you under $300 for parts (if you go all out will be about $500 in parts...) Then look for a used pair of Senn HD580 or HD600. You should be able to find a pair for $200 or less. This is at the upper region of your budget, but selling the sound card will help offset the costs.

X fi is designed for gaming . Don't get me wrong, they are very good for gaming, but there are others that are better for music .
