Help: How to get to 4ghz + on my E3400 2.6ghz LGA 775

Thread Starter

Heya everyone, first post.

I picked up a new system last week to replace my ageing AMD 754.

This new system is SO much faster than my old system and I already have a few things coming to boost the performance more.

My system specs are.

E3400 2.6ghz socket LGA 775. (Slightly better than stock fan, it has heat tubes, no name.)
Asus P5QL Pro Motherboard
4gb G.Skill PC2 8500 5-5-5-15
GeForce 9500 GT 512mb GDDR3, Overclocked Edition.
Barracuda 7200.7 120mb IDE HHD 8mb Cache (my 7200.11 1TB 32mb Cache Sata will be going in soon)
Cooler Master Ammo Case, LAN party (Ugly but flows well and has a handle)
550w logisys PSU
Windows 7 Home 32-bit

I bought the system for $150 so I am pretty happy with it.

I started overclocking as soon as I got home but I hit the stable wall.
Mind you, I havnt overclocked since my old ass Socket A and AMD XP-2600 Barton core. LOL

I moved up slowly, only increasing fsb and letting the P5QL Pro do the rest, set PCI to 100 too.

I got all the way up to 3.68ghz fully stable under benching and games, ram OC'ed along with it. My temps never get over 59c at full load and ambient was 22c.

I got there with 283x13

Any high than 283x13 and I would get an OC failure notice.

I scaled backed to 3.64ghz today at 280x13 because it runs no higher than 55-56c and I didnt want to be so close to the limit.

So this is where you guys come in as I need your help.

I want to hit 4ghz on air and be 100% stable.

This guy hit 4.5ghz but his temps are really high (If I am reading them right since he cant stay still.)

So where do I go next?
Does anyone have exp with my setup?
Should I think about a better power supply? Which one?

I plan to move to a quad core soon, which one is the best one for overclocking and which is the best for leaving alone?

I am also going to grab 4gb more of that G.Skill ram and a much better graphics card and a Vertex 3 120gb SSD linked through a PCIE card since the mobo only supports Sata II.

I was going to build a Sandy Bridge system but decided to go with a LGA-775 build to wait and see what LGA-2011 brings us or Sandy Bridge-E.

I dont mind upgrading to SSD, upgrading the Vid card or even upgrading the power supply because I can use those in my future build.

Thanks everyone.

-Eric-

Im using the same board as you and seem to get to around the same speed with my chip before it starts getting unstable.

Im gonna try some more later so ill check back here and let you know how i get on.

Ok i've done some more playing around with my setup and managed this...

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1831904

4.0ghz!

Can you post a cpu-z screenshot?

You can see instruction on how to do it in this post...

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...b-updated.html

Just google cpu-z and u will find it to download.

This should help us see what settings you are using, etc.

Heya SkinBob, congrats on going to 4ghz.

Here is my validation on CPU-Z, I had CPU-Z already but didnt know anything about the validation, cool feature.

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1832101

I tried 284x13 and booted with 3.7ghz, ran CineBench but crashed at the end so it wasnt stable.

I am wondering if I am getting errors because of the RAM being overclocked.
Ram is running at 1132mhz right now, its rated for 1066mhz.

I would say definately your ram, in the same part of the bios where you change the core speed you can also change the ram down to get it as close to stock as you can.

Also your cpu voltage might be causing a problem. I have to run mine at 1.3 to get 3.7ghz, but to get 4.0ghz i had to up it to 1.4, but the temps on load at 4ghz were too high for my liking so i clocked it back down to 3.7.

Changed your ram/fsb ratio. The ram is running too high. At higher overclocks you also need to give it much more voltage. The fsb/voltage increments are not linear. That board can clock high since I have done so last week with a E7300.

Would you be able to push for an aftermarket cooler? Temps are going to be your biggest barrier as I believe that CPU can be pushed to 1.4+ vCore. You might have better chances of stability with a 1:1 FSB/RAM ratio. To make up for the lost mhz on your 1066's you can try tightening up the timings a bit.

The cooler that I have is better than stock but I am not sure what it is, it has heat tubes and the fan sits flat ontop of it. Thats pretty much all I know about it, really it only looks SLIGHTLY better than stock and thats because of the heat tubes.

He had a Quad in the system before I bought it, did any of the Quads come with a cooler with heat tubes?

I was kinda thinking about a CoolerMaster V8 or V12
Its GIANT though, I havnt had to shop for coolers for a long time, what do you guys suggest? I dont want to go liquid cooled, I have seen too many failures. The H50 was interesting for its size but again I saw failures from that too when I looked around.

What do you guys suggest I set my RAM timings to?
How do I change the FSB/RAM ratio? I dont think I saw that option.

I will try to play with things a little more, I forgot how much fun this is.

I got to 4ghz with 310x13 but was not stable.

I just need to figure out how to make it stable now. :/
