whats more important, mhz or CL?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, im running my Crucial Ballistix Ram at 1866 CL10, at 1.64v in my sig rig and i was wondering...

Whats more important for gaming?

I can push the RAM up to 2133mhz, but i will most likely have to relax the timings, or, at the current mhz i could push for a lower CL?

Thoughts an experience appreciated!

Cheers,

Ishi

The Ram speed will improve your pc,s overall performance. But gaming is usually limited to your graphics card!!! So increasing you ram speed may give you a slight fps increase, timings/settings seem two have little effect on gaming performance!

it seems to me that he is not asking about gaming, but the overal performance and which one will give the most performance to his pc.

further than that i have no idea on ram timings vs Speed so i cant awnser your question frown.gif

Very broadly speaking, the SB IMC prefers higher frequencies over tighter timings (this article shows this, there is another article which I can't find which shows this better).

Second that.
But i don`t understand why people don`t test it with theire rig.
I takes about 5 minutes.
Just do a run of maxxmem ( or similar ) with high frequency -
then do a run with lower frequency and tighter timings and compare.
Very quick and simple thumb.gif
Anway most of the time you will see that higher frequency yields in higher bandwith compared to tighter timings@lower frequency. (Atleast on intel rigs)

AMD prefers lower CL and Intel prefers Higher frequency is what I've heard (at least for the current crop of chips).

Though you won't really notice a difference between stock clocks and customised ones if all you're doing is gaming. As others have said, its more gpu dependent.
