New to OC'ing-Athlon ii x4 640 + asrock 870 extreme 3 capabilities?

Hi,

I have ordered my base system from a local company here in Aus. I'm a laptop-convert, so haven't overclocked previously and just wanted some advice.

Mobo is an asrock 870 extreme3, CPU is an athlon ii x4 640 with third party cooling.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this set up, and what specific settings you got out of it?

[the athlon ii x4 club doesn't list any 640s]

[I should note, I run Arch Linux, not windows, so applications inside windows are out]

Thanks

Athlon IIs don't clock high, about 3.6ghz on C2 stepping, and 3.8 on C3 stepping. Another note, if your temps are about 55C on load then you have about maxed your CPU / Cooler, as mine will crash at 57C, my Grandma's at 58C and my friends Athlon II at 56C.

For checking stability you can just download prime 95, yes they do have a linux client, it's command line though, so I hope you're comfortable with that. I don't know about your motherboard, but a lot of lower end mobos don't like OCd CPUs, or just can't take the added speed of the ref clock.

A couple of general rules for overclocking:

Keep your HT low, about 2000mhz

Your northbridge is usually fine, it will keep going up but that doesn't matter all to much, back it off to gain stability, if that doesn't work, go back up and increase voltage.

ISOLATE EVERYTHING. Keep all of your settings low, and find the max setting of your MOBO ref clock. Another thing, WRITE EVERYTHING down, if it's stable do that too. Don't trust your mobo to keep settings, it may not POST, and then you'll have to pull the mobo battery. ( It happens a lot if I don't watch the ram speeds )

Keep reading up on stuff, and watch your voltage and heat, don't let it get out of control. Good luck, and if you want to read more about overclocking the Athlon IIs and Phenom IIs, here's a really good guide:

Thanks Dr.Pepper.

Very comfortable with command line.

3.6 is around what I had figured, just wanted feed back on what voltage etc others were running their athlon ii's at.

My voltage is at 1.55, it's a little high, and you have to watch your room temperature, as it will crash upstairs when the ambient temp is around 78F, but downstairs at around 67F it can run at 3.7 all day on the same voltage. Your mileage will vary.

If you're wondering about my cooling, you can see pics and read more about the CM Hyper 212 plus here: ( I took a whole bunch of pictures and posted 'em yesterday )

and here's the club if you get one:
