Buying a new keyboard, advice needed...

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a new keyboard now that my Saitek Cyborg V.5 has become... really uncomfortable to use.

I'm currently typing on a SIIG mechanical keyboard. The keys rattle a bit and the spacebar just feels awkward since it doesn't go down as much as the other keys when pressed it seems. The 2KRO is also a concern. I'm planning on returning it soon.

Another keyboard I've used but have now sold is the ABS M1. I really didn't like the feel.

So basically, I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard that:
  • Isn't too loud (no MX Blue switches I guess)
  • Doesn't have rattling/shaky keys
  • ...doesn't feel like the ABS M1?
  • Preferably has volume control
  • 6KRO or NKRO
  • Numpad
I've been looking at the Steelseries 6gv2 and the Das Model S Silent (with student discount).

Reading about the black switches in the 6gv2 make me wonder though - they aren't tactile (I assume this is the "bump" feeling when you press down) and don't make any clicky sounds. The silence is a plus, since it will be used in a dorm, but how would this feel any different from a rubber dome keyboard? Do you need to bottom-out on black switches for the keys to register? The description of black switches also makes me think it would feel like the ABS keyboard, which didn't have a bump or any noise besides when bottoming out.

As for the Das keyboard, it doesn't have volume control and I'm not a fan of glossy anything, since fingerprints annoy me, but I hear great things about it.

What would you recommend?

P.s. tactile does mean the "bump" feeling you get when pressing down on mechanical keys right?

yah tactile is the bump. the no clickies usually use a hall effect sensor which activates when it senses a magnetic field (ie you pushing down a magnet into the sensor zone).

these dont need to be pushed all the way down to activate and may or may not be annoying (you don't know if you've "typed" the button)

Since Cherry MX Black switches don't have the bump, would the 6gv2 be out of the question? Could someone who has used both black and brown switches comment on how they feel relatively?

Leopold Cherry Brown for 18KRO over USB.

I hate blacks for typing, it's like you have to work to pickup your fingers every time and they can still be quite loud because they are pretty easy to bottom out on since you have no idea when the thing actually activates, I would say brown is your friend and pickup that Das or Ripsters Leopold.

The only Leopold keyboards I've seen from elitekeyboards are tenkeyless. I forgot to mention I need a numpad. >_> Since blacks are out of the question, what are the better brown switch keyboards in the ~$100 range besides Das Silent?

I would wait for OCN to restock their Ducky keyboards, they're around $110 and have the flame for the escape key.

This is pretty much what I'm looking for. However, some googling tells me RMAs with Ducky is iffy... and although I love this site, I don't exactly want OCN 'decals' on it. I might just fold and buy a Das Silent.

You could also go a little more expensive and pick up a Filco from Amazon, about $30 more, but they're amazing keyboards and through Amazon an RMA would be very easy.
