How much PPD will this get?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I just saw this thread:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...something.html

Then I remembered that like 5 or so years ago, I bought a server that has been sitting in my basement since the day I bought it. Don't ask me why I bought it, 'cuz I can't remember.

After I got it, it was so huge and heavy that I never got around to doing anything with it, and just forgot about it.

Some info about it, found a P/N 328870-001

And on the back there's a serial number: 3862C701

So I did some searching, and it brought me to this link:
http://www.dpwh.gov.ph/policies_proc...yBilling_D.pdf

Do Ctrl+F and search for the serial number.

They bought this server for $9,482.50 in April 2000.

Found Specs:

Compaq Proliant 5500
Xeon Pentium III 550Mhz

IIRC there may be 4 XEONS inside, but don't quote me on it.

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this...

Is it worth folding? If so, what kind of PPD can I get?

This thing is HEAVY, and most likely power hungry and loud ( guessing ) so I can't move it around or anything. It'd have to stay where it is.

There's a CD drive, if I need to install Linux on it, but hopefully it'll have something in place already.

Is it worth the hassle?

Afraid not.. With four Pentium III equivalent cores running at 550Mhz, it wont be enough for SMP. You would be looking at maybe 250 PPD for the whole thing...

Yeah man these things are huge

I'm moving in about a month and gotta figure out how to get rid of it.

I'll probably keep the fans and PSU's though

And maybe the processors to turn into key chains. Haha

I couldn't believe someone actually bought this thing for $10K 10 years ago, and now it's pretty much useless

If you enjoy bleeding eardrums then keep the fans - although they may well not use standard pinouts so check them before you plug them in (even if the connectors look the same).

The PSU(s) will be basically worthless - way too much power on the 5V rail and not enough 12V. Won't power anything more recent than a P3 - I would doubt they even have a 12V P4 connector, and they'll also lack SATA & any GPU power.

Yea, I was trying to figure out what to salvage, but you're right, nothing in there is useful.

Considering I go for low noise setups, I would never end up using those fans.

You want to buy some RAM?

Check out how much it was brand new.

I gotta figure out how/where to bring this thing to get recycled/disposed properly.
