First an early pic of the loop, before some cable tidying, but it shows where my pump and res are.

after the loop is completely bled you should never have to refill it during the life of the computer. Obviously not recommended, but you can get away with it.

how much does a water cooling system usually cost?

$130 -> ~$4000 for internal loops, but it depends on the quality of parts you use.

performance is lost since it doesn't have as good of a thermal heat capacity as water does. Ethylene glycol is also much more viscous,14 compared to ~1.7 @ apx 80f (common liquid temp of a loop with decent cooling), which would hinder flowrates. Only reason to use it is if you are going sub zero (since efficiency of the coolant really doesn't matter) with a chiller or have mixed metals (where it's needed to prevent corrosion). If you do use ethylene glycol use a 1:5 mixture or less of glycol: water.

I've been running mine for about 13 months now, and I've had to add coolant a few times. It could be that there are some resident bubbles left in the radiators, but for some reason or another the water keeps slowly disappearing. It's easy to see from the reservoir; something like a spoonful in 2 months, yet replacement air somehow finds its way in.

The coolant I'm using:
- mostly distilled/battery water
- some blue anti-freeze to prevent growths
- a 10g slab of silver in the reservoir
- some UV hue blue for easy detection of leaks
I did somehow measure the amount of anti-freeze in the beginning, but having added a bit of water and that sometimes, I've no idea what the blend is like these days. After 11 months, everything still looks completely clear.

I've even re-used some of the coolant. I had to replace a leaking connector, so with the pumps stopped I opened a valve on the lowest part of the cooling inside the case, let enough coolant out to clear the leaking part, replaced it, and poured the coolant back in.

For those interested, the valve thing on the GPU block:
