Overclocked i5 2500K underclocking @ load??

Thread Starter
This makes absolutely no sense to me. I had a Corsair H50 installed on my i5 2500K and was running at 4.4 GHz, stress testing kept it at 4.4 GHz. Installed my water cooling loop, and now it drops down to 3.8 GHz when stressed.

I've got EIST, SpeedStep, Turbo Boost, Adjust CPU ratio in OS, CPU Spread Spectrum, C1E, all the power savings crap disabled, yet it's still downclocking me from 4.4 GHz to 3.8 GHz in LinX and ~4 GHz in Prime95. No, I'm not overheating. Hottest temperature so far is 57C on one core, all others are 51-55C. I thought that maybe because there isn't anything plugged into the CPU fan header that it would throttle it back under load, but there is no option in the BIOS to stop/fix this. Any thoughts?

P.S. - Got work today so won't be able to respond for 9-10 hours.

is it possible it is turboing down?

It is the turbo boost settings throttling it down. I had the same issue. You have to manually adjust the setting. On my board it's called turbo boost power limit. I set it to 180 180. I believe it acts as a safety based on wattage used, not sure exactly how it works.

Try leaving spread spectrum disabled and putting all the other things listed in your post to auto. SB does not seem to like running with all those power saving features disabled, especially EIST, Turbo Boost and Adjust CPU ratio in OS. If you're booting into Win7 make sure your performance setting is set to high performance.

I wouldn't say that SB doesn't like having those options disabled, because myself along with countless others have those settings disabled and are running 100% stable.

I'm running a P67a-ud4 at 5.0ghz with 1.41v under load water-cooled. I disable turbo boost and all CPU options and have never had a problem.

The TDP setting doesn't make sense because all he did was change cooling devices. It should've hit that limit before just as it does now.

Every chip is different and I know of some cases where enabling those options solved problems. YMMV
