Which free firewall for Windows 7 64-bit - Page 2

post #11 of 18
People are freaking about security seriously. I just use MSE and never had a single problem. All my family have Avast! installed, I might switch them to MSE later.

I just use Windows Firewall, MSE and common sense.

Just use the Windows firewall, and a little program called Windows 7 firewall Control. There is a free version that will suit your needs. Allows you to control all outgoing, and in coming connection attempts using windows firewall. Link included.
There is a 32 and 64 bit version to choose from!

Since you have a router which has it's own firewall, Windows Firewall is sufficient as a software firewall. In an implementation as such this, the only purpose for an application level firewall is:

1) Protecting from internal inbound attacks
2) Be able to filter applications that are allowed to talk outward/originate connections to remote servers.

By default on your router unless you have initiated a connection out, any inbound traffic from the WAN will be denied.

I'd say the firewall in windows 7 is a massive improvement and is quite good, but sorry I'd say comodo, tiny system resources and hugely customisable, switch between different settings with a button

Zone Alarm -> Windows 7 = junk

There's basically 3 solutions that stand out. All three have HIPS something that some free versions lack and is becoming a must have to give you extra protection.

Online Armor
Outpost Firewall
Comodo Firewall
