Volt modding an 8400gs 512mb

Thread Starter
I have a Geforce 8400gs 512mb that runs 80 celsius at furmark full load. I hear these have a thermal limit of around 120 celsius. I currently run at 725/414/1800, and am looking to oc higher. Can anyone guide a first time volt modder? I have basic soldering and electrical skills.

p.s: Attached are 2 pics of the gfx card. It's by BFG.

120*c
Try around 85*c. There is no headroom.

Unless the 8400gs is different for some reason but it's usually 110*C

By that temperature it should already be artifacting.

@OP, your going to need some Heatsink for your RAM, and another fan. I'll walk you through this.

I don't have any ram or chipset heatsinks. I have a few old aluminum cpu heatsinks that I could probably cut to the right size, and 2 80mm fans, but that's about it. The point is to not have to spend over $15.

What? 110 is the TJ max, the amount of heat it can handle before damage irreversible occurs. It may or may not artifact at those temps..

@ op, it's probably not worth your time if this is to gain more performance, just buy a better card of CL or Kijiji.. If this is just a little project for some fun that's cool but I highly recommend just buying a new card.

Which isnt far from 80*c after a Vmod.

@OP, cut the heatsink up and glue them on with hot glue and a TIM of your choosing.

May want to look at this:

Well please don't just randomly post numbers.. someone with your amount of posts should know better.

Another cooling solution is to use an old cpu cooler held on with screws or zip-ties, if you have the space after the card.

looks like my 8400gs but mines low profile.
sorry cant check for u to find the points ect. little bussy atm

but i spent $20 on a Scyth 3,000rpm fan. its loud as hell, but drops the temps down a lot.
i was running at like 85+ degrees oced. on stock volts.
and with the fan ( at 133cfm! biggrin.gif and 56DB D: ) it droped to something like 50 - 60 underload o.O
now vmodded :/ its hitting 95+ with the fan haha
goodluck with ur card btw smile.gif

oh and btw if its for a everyday computer, itll be best to just upgrade to a new card.
something like the 9800gt or so. bit of power ( fair bit of power over the 8400gs o.O ) '
but their faily cheap now days smile.gif

@gregory: I had some 8400GS and none was getting that hot, even though all were using similar small coolers. So I would recommend to take the cooler off and replace the thermal paste if needed.
At this point/those temps it does not make sense going for a vmod.

If you get you cooling issues solved have a look at the pic attached and tell us the writings on the labeled parts.
