First Time Water Cooling - Page 2

Just a quick couple of questions before I start putting my cooling rig together.

If you look at the image of my planned set-up you'll note that the 360 rad in the top is higher than the res. What happens to the water in the rad, especially when I switch off the PC and the pump stops, will it not all drain back into the res and overflow?

Has anybody got any suggestions on where I could put a drain port?

It is a closed loop, no water can get out.

This is difficult stuff for a first time watercooler, so sorry for the stupid questions. What about when I'm filling the loop, do I do this via the fill port on the res and have the pump running once it's primed or is there an alternative?

No leave your top fans the way they are. You would rather be pulling air in from outside. The only reason you should do push is if the fans were above the radiator.

As for the Radiator up top, it'll be fine, just don't fill the res up to the brim.

I have the same setup with rad up top and res below it and never noticed a problem, its probably due to some closed loop pressure scientific mumbo jumbo. All I know is it just works.

It's alright, we all have to start somewhere. Ideal fan placement would be for the fan to be pushing/blowing air through the radiator.

To fill a res, fill it as close to the top as you feel comfortable, then cap the res. Turn on your PSU (preferably jumped to properly leak test) until the water is just about to the level of your hose exhausting water, then turn your PSU off to prevent running your pump with no water. Open the res, fill it up and keep repeating until you don't have to fill it up anymore.

After this runs for a day or two, air bubbles will escape so you will need to add a bit more water, this is normal.

Finally, make sure you do a proper leak test.
