The Witcher (1) - First Impressions

Hey all.

You may remember my thread from last night. Where i asked what mods were essential for this game.

Well, i've installed some mods, and started playing.

Unfortunately my initial impressions of the game are...well, not too great.

So far i've found the story confusing and a little overwhelming. I know this probably fits in with the amnesia thing the main character has, but eh, it just makes me think that this is an excuse to make things up as they go along.

Animations remind me somewhat of Fallout 3/NV; stiff and unnatural. entering dialogue is also very similar. "Wolf" also has a very bland emotionless tone/behavior, again i put this down to just him as a character but it makes it difficult to relate to him in any way -- terrible for immersion.

Another thing thats troubled me is the repetative taunts NPC's spout in combat, which are hardly convincing given that they do it while being sliced excessively with my sword and soaked in their own blood. Again, not too immersive, given that these are supposed to be humans.

Coinidentally, combat too is lacking. I was hacking away at this mage "Sovolla" (hardest difficulty) for a whole 15 minutes and -- starting to think i was doing something wrong or the game had glitched -- i had to minimize and google how to kill him.

My experience tells me that if a game makes NPC's have stupid amounts of health like this, they're usually compensating for something. It's also just unrealistic, frustrating and tedious.

Anyway, After sleeping with this mage with twitching boobies (i didn't plan it, it just happend after giving her a potion - wth?) i left the home "fort" and made contact with a small village/settlement with a phantom wolf problem (lol), and i'm immediately greeted by this redhead in a tight green outfit, whome.....let me guess, you can sleep with?

lol...

It's like a cheap porno game if you ask me. I guess this is why it's refered to as a mature title, but frankly having the possibility of many sexual partners i don't think is very mature at all, especially if all they involve is a simple quest and a little bit of dialogue.

All in all, it's so far been a bit of a shallow experience.

Maybe i'm just difficult to please, or maybe it's just badly translated, or perhaps game standards have just fallen (in favour of the latter). I'll be giving this game a chance and I'm hoping it will improve, i'll just have to wait and see.

Sadly, what i have seen so far hasn't impressed me. Additionally, i'm only writing this because i've had my second CTD in the past half hour.

Oh well, it was only £12.99 on STEAM.

Can anyone relate to what i've described? Will things improve?

easily one of the best RPGs available to play, the game continues to pick up and gain speed as the game goes on with the final 2-3 chapters absolutely epic.

The game is considered mature, because it doesnt hold your hand, the world is dark and gritty. Alot of the time you make a choice, you are making it based on which choice you think is not as bad as the others. The game expects the player to be smart, can you do that? The game doesnt tell you where to go and what to do, it tells you this happen, then you decide where to go and what to do from there, with some hints from the people who give you the quests and such.

Enemies dont have massive amounts of health, they have rather little, but some need to be defeated a certain way. It was your fault that you didnt kill his henchmen. I beat the game on hard.

Things will happen throughout the game that are caused by your actions, good, bad, and other and you simply need to accept the fact that your actions caused them.

give it more time. you are judging a game by just a small part of it, the story will always be kind of confusing, and not everything will be explained, why??????????????? because thats how a good story is told.

Soldier on a little be more and im sure you will start enjoying the game more, if not for the combat, then for the incredible story being told, the fact that your actions, whether small or big, whether you even acted, effect the story. Hell sometimes there are choices to be made, and you didnt even know it.

Be be honest. Post #1 and #2 share the same thoughts as mine. I hated and loved the game. I never played the game before its "rereleased version" I haven't played Witcher 2 yet but I'm praying to got the game isn't as stiff and clunky as the first game. I hope there is a balance between great and smooth gameplay with an epic story. Not just an Epic story with Clunky gameplay.

Dude, you only played the prologue..

The game gets WAY better as you progress. Tell me, back when you played the first Mass Effect did that pull you in/impress you? When I look back, it wasn't very impressive. However, I kept playing and ended up loving it.

Give the game a chance and don't judge it just from the prologue..

The witcher franchise is easily the best RPG franchise of all time. Beats anything BioWare has done, which is kind of ironic given the first witcher uses a BioWare engine ( NWN2 engine )

I just started playing the second witcher after finishing the first yesterday and so far I love it. The combat was initially frustrating, but again I gave it a chance and re-thinked how my strategy in combat. I was playing TW2 the same as TW1; a big mistake.

Give TW1 a chance. Remember it's an old game so it will feel dated at times but don't let that discourage you. I highly recommend playing through it before playing TW2, though. Your choices carry over and will impact what you do in the sequel. I hear there's 16 different endings in TW2, and your choices in TW1 will definitely impact those endings.

Well i've taken a break from my 3 hour session with it, and i must admit a part of me is liking it, but at the same time, disliking it.

I can relate to what you say about Mass Effect 1, and i'm beginning to develop the same feelings towards The Witcher (1).

I did enjoy Mass Effect, but at the same time, i could give you a list of faults and annoyances , the sequel was a very nice improvement.

I'm definitely going to be giving this game a chance, especially if you say it's alot like Mass Effect 1.

I agree with the above posts^^ Just give it time. I gave the TW1 a try myself and got hooked XD Once SCII got released, I laid back a bit to play SCII and get up to speed and TW slowly faded into the background. I hope to return to finish the last 2 chapters, but, so far, I can say that I loved it and can only hope the TW2 makes it an even better experience

Well it depends on a person I guess...however for me Witcher 1 is best RPG out there (Diablo II and Baldurs Gate are there too)...

When I first played it I gave up...I didn't like the combat system at all...

When I came back for the second time...I gave it a chance...and stick to it a little longer...

Trust me everything about Witcher is hard to beat...the game is awesome...and as stated in chapter 4 and 5 the story gets way better...first three are like the introduction

The Witcher is easily up there in my top ten PC games of all time, and I've been playing PC games for 20 years.

I never really found it confusing or difficult to follow, but you can't rush things.

A lot of people have issues with the combat system, but I never had a problem with it. It worked fairly well, and while wasn't anything special, it never got in the way.

Agreed.

The Polish voices are much better and are great for immersion, giving the game a slightly exotic eastern european flair that is a big part of the atmosphere.
