WD Caviar Black 1TB vs Samsung Spinpoint 1TBF3

I've always been told that the F3 is the best HD out there at the moment but I heard word of the Caviar Black being on sale for around $20-30. Should I just go for the Black?

Also I've been looking around more and can someone tell me more about the Samsung F4?

The Samsung F4 2TB for instance is 5400rpm drive, much suited for data storage. The F3 1TB is a much faster 7200rpm drive with less disk platters, quicker access times, and better suited for windows, games, programs etc.
(...Then you have SSD's which is a different topic altogether)
I would go for the Samsung F3 1TB thumb.gif

The samsung f4 may be a slower drive in RPMs, but it does have larger platters (3x667GB's vs 2x500GB's in the 1tb f3) so its nearly as fast in most applications. And its far quieter! My f4 vs my raided f3's is night and day.

I guess Im kind of biased when it comes to hard drives because I have always like western digital the best. The one thing the caviar black has that the samsungs don't, is the 5 year warranty.

Which one do you find more reliable? Or has the least amount of failed drives?

I've had a spinpoint F3 before, and i currently have a caviar black, easiest way i can break it down is: caviar black = faster, but also much louder, the clicks are rather noticable unless your gaming, but on general useage you can clearly hear it, bit annoying, but it depends what you want, i could never hear the spinpoint, but it was a bit slower.

Was this difference in speed drastic or very minimal?

Well, unnoticable for most things tbf. But when i copy big files to a usb, or to another partition, the Black seems faster, from my experience anyway.

Edit: Just thought id add as well, that currently on the WD black, it takes ~14 seconds to get from POST to the desktop on my machine, and it takes less then 4 seconds to shut down, dunno if that kind of thing is relevent to you. Took around twice as long when i was on the f3, but again, its not really a big deal.

ive had WD blacks (1tb), samsung f3 (1tb) and samsung f4 (2tb). from my experience the WD black is the fastest but not really noticeable doing normal tasks i would say. The f3 is a good balance between quite and speed so i prefer the f3 since the Sig rig is in the bedroom. But if your worried about warranty i would go with the WD black over the samsung. Currently im getting the last of my samsung f4's and them moving back to WD because of the samsung buy out frown.gif

But in terms of reliability they are all about the same, i think i read somewhere that the f3 is like .0002% more likely to fail (to wd black) but cant remember where..

But that's contrary to all the benchmarks showing that the F3 is faster...

And to the OP, if they're the same price, get the F3, but if one is cheaper than the other, get that one, you're unlikely to notice much real world difference except in copying large files (where the F3 wins)
