WD Caviar Black 1TB vs Samsung Spinpoint 1TBF3 - Page 2

And to the OP, if they're the same price, get the F3, but if one is cheaper than the other, get that one, you're unlikely to notice much real world difference except in copying large files (where the F3 wins)

And which are "all" these benchmarks you speak of?

This is the 2TB Caviar black, which would be marginally slower then the 1TB model, and its still keeping up with the f3 1TB no worries what so ever, and beating it in alot of others wink.gif

Look at the read and write speeds of the F3 on the other page.

The only thing the black is slightly better at is access time, but not to the degree that the F3 is faster in read and writes.

Just look at the conclusions of that review you linked to with regards to its performance.

I'm not just saying this because I've got some F3's, I got them because of them being good

Just a FYI, the F3 makes an oscillating humming/vibration noise in one second intervals. If you have a fairy quiet computer, the F3's sound signature will be very apparent. The only way I could remove the noise is by placing it on top of 1-inch packing foam. Grommets won't dampen the vibration enough.

I have Blacks and Hitachis but the noise they make does not annoy me like the F3.

this i agree i prefer WD they actually have faster read write speeds vs f3,s wich make them better suited for a boot drive. Although the samsungs do have fast download speeds, and are a little less expensive, thats why they have so many fans here at ocn , funny even people who dont own them ??biggrin.gif

Got any benchmarks to prove this?

Comparing benchmarks from the Samsung F3 and WD Black, both with HDTach for reads and HD Tune for writes:

Samsung: Average Read 124.8, Average Write 96.7, Burst Speed (reading): 258.9
WD: Average Read 96.9, Average Write 88.1, Burst Speed (reading): 238.5

I have both drives in my system right now. Would you like me to prove the F3 is faster? It is also quieter and cooler.
Not to say I don't appreciate WD's drives, but raw performance I've seen time and time again the F3's win.

Umm, im not going to get into a pointless argument about this, but err did you look at it properly? the read/write benchmarks you told me look at, are showing the black winning again lol. bearing in mind again, even that this is the 2TB model which is slower, go look at it properly this time? tongue.gif

Read the bottom of the benchmarks when looking at them, to determine if less or more is better on which benchmark.

First I agree with Riou. The vibration noise that came from my F3's was bad enough for me to return them. If it was read / write noise it wouldn't have bothered me as much as that constant vroom....vroom....vroom.
For the most reliable drives made get the Western Digital RE4's. They are interprise drives made for RAID arrays, but you can use them as a single drive. I have two 500Gb RE4's in a RAID0 array short stroked to 500GB total.
Here is my benchmark. Sorry i don't have a single drive benchmark, but you can see that these are very fast, low access time and SILENT:

I'm not sure what you're on about...

Read and write speeds, you want higher MB/s, agreed? So when one number is higher than the other, that means it's faster at reading and writing...

For sure access time is slightly faster on the black, but I said that already. Read and write, the F3 is definitely faster than the WD Black, I summarised the speeds in my last post. Not sure If you're good with numbers or not, but I think you need to check again...
