Would I benefit from Gigabit Ethernet?

Hi. I was about to purchase an Ethernet switch and an Ethernet cable so I could have internet on my PC & PS3 at the same time. Then I began reading about Gigabit Ethernet and their cables. I'm now wondering if my hardware supports it and if it would improve my internet usage at all.

I currently have Cox's High Speed Internet Premier with PowerBoost download speeds of 27 Mbps for $65 a month. I was thinking about upgrading to Ultimate with download speeds of 55 Mbps for $25 more but I'm no sure how much of a difference I would notice 'cause this is pretty quick. It can be slow sometimes, though.

I am using Motorola SB5101U SURFboard Cable Modem with a Cat5e cable.

I have an ASUS P8P67 Deluxe motherboard with "Dual Gigabit LAN Support (with One Intel LAN)".

I download a lot of big files, like 1 to 5 GBs, from download sites like Fileserve and sometimes P2P like BitTorrent. I don't do any major file transfers, though. I also play FPS games online a lot.

If there are any other questions let me know.

Could someone clarify this for me?

If you're not doing large file transfers around the house, then not really.
If you're streaming 720p/1080p video to a TV or something. Then yes.
But for upgrade sake, why not just invest in getting one?

I watch a lot of Youtube videos and I find that 720 or 1080p can take a while to load. It depends on the video. I'm using a 42" 1080p TV for a monitor.

What would you recommended for me. What would I need?

That's more of a YT server issue.
I for one have the same problem.
I can try and watch a video in 360p, and it takes forever.
But when I switch it to 480p, it's way faster.
Same with 720p and 1080p videos. Not sure why that is, but it still happens.
I assume it's on YT's side and not on my network.

But I've heard raving reviews about this ASUS RT-N16, not to mention you can flash DD-WRT or Tomato onto it.

Your modem is only 10/100Mbps and only has 1 ethernet port so if you want your internal network to be 1000Mbps you'd need to get a Gigabit switch. If you want internet access for both then this is the way to go.Or if you have use for wireless then a router with 10/100 or 1GB ports would also be good for this setup.Just run a cable from the modem to your switch/router(WAN port),then plug in your ps3 + pc to the LAN ports and your set. This will not improve your download speeds, only upgrading the your ISP service would do this,it will improve your dl/ul speeds but how much I couldn't say(If you go with the better plan).

I honestly have no use for a wireless router. I was only gotta get it for the Gigabit upgrade. So...basically, what you're saying is if I was to buy buy three of , and buy , then connect my Motorola to that and the systems to the switch, my PC and PS3 would be online at 1000 Mbps? Am I understanding you correctly?

No, your internet plan if you upgraded would only be 55 Mb/s You will not saturate the 1 Gb/s line. If you do large file transfers/Stream HD video to the PS3 from the PC then that will be faster.

Basically:
Local Area Network 1 Gb/s bandwidth
Internet 55 Mb/s

This^^ the switch & cable won't make your internet speed faster.Just the transferring of files and such between your connected devices on your network. You'd still download at 55Mbps or whatever it is,same with upload.

I don't do that at all.

OK, then, thanks for the help people. I just wanted to know before I bought anything Ethernet related. I had done some Google searching and heard that it wasn't so beneficial for internet and more for file transfers but I wanted to get double conformation. I haven't slept in three days so I can't think for **** but am purchasing things 'cause it's the weekend.

While I'm here, one more question. Do you think I would feel the upgrade from 27 Mbps to 55 Mbps? Is it worth the $25? Thanks.

EDIT: Actually, I have a second final question. I have a 7 ft Ethernet cable here that is Cat5 and was going to use it for my setup. Would there be any benefit upgrading it to a Cat5e? I heard something about Crosstalk and the bleeding of signals with normal Cat5 cables but I wouldn't notice this because I'm not doing transfers, right? So I should be OK with this cable here for internet? It's the same speed, right?

CAT 5e cable is basically a poor man's gigabit cable. They aren't the same speed, but if you were to buy CAT 6, it will only work at 100 unless you have gigabit equipment for everything. By the way cheap cables are at www.monoprice.com if you download a ton with torrents or have a server, then you will need 55. But 25 should be more than enough for internet browsing IMO
